If you moved recently or moving, how much have you been quoted?
Northern, VA. Includes 30 days of free storage. Just under $2,700 for moving out and moving into the new home. No packing or materials. Assuming 8 hours of work for move out day and move in (16 hours total)
This included 3-4 guys, for a full day. I can't remember the exact number of hours...probably around 8-9. We moved from 2600 sq feet to 2200, in the same town. We had as much stuff as we possibly could ready for loading in the garage. I think they had the entire house loaded into trucks in less than 2 hours. It was incredible. We also labeled everything with colored masking tape+room name, and had coordinating labels at the new house, so it was easy for them to unload into each room.
We didn't have them take every little thing, doing some of that on our own before or after the official move day. We did have a small storage unit and paid my friend's 2 high school aged boys $20 per hour each to move that, which was MUCH cheaper than pro movers :-)
We usually DIY with a u-haul or pods, so I donāt have a good local move comparison. However, that seems high to me. The 8 hours per day seems excessive, particularly for the move from storage to the next place. They should be able to fit everything in one truck load and I canāt imagine it would take more than a couple hours to load and unload (4-ish hours). Of course you are paying a premium for the month of storage because that doubles the work of moving.
I'm helping an elderly relative move into a small apartment and we were just quoted $150 truck fee plus $125/hour for a crew of 4 movers. 3% fee for paying by credit card. (<--- Eye roll. It's not 1991. Just build your fees into your costs at this point.)
That seems high to me. I moved from downtown Baltimore to a suburb 20 miles away last year. I think we paid $600 total, including a tip. IIRC it was $80 an hour if you paid cash, and it took around 5.5 hours total, including travel time (about 25 minutes). We used a smaller company so IDK if that makes a difference. I think it was just the truck owner and 1 other guy who did it.
Are you sure it will really take 16 hours to move? That seems like a lot of hours unless you have a ton of stuff. We moved from a 2 bedroom apartment, but it was on the 3rd floor (thankfully there was an elevator!) so it involved some logistics to get our stuff out.
If it does actually take 16 hours of work and they are storing stuff for a month, I guess that's not horribly out of line?

Okay weāve had 2 companies come give us quotes. For reference, we live in an approximately 1600sqft townhouse with 3 bedrooms. Thereās 4 of us.
Company one (we have used them twice to move): estimated 7-9 hours total, one day, 5 movers, 2 trucks. $3200-3600 depending on final calculation of time spent.
Company two: estimated 7-8 hours total, one day, 3-4 movers, 1 truck. $2900.
I don't think the quotes are out of line especially if you will be storing things.
My dad's company paid something like $18,000 to move my parents from SC to FL in the early 2000s, but that was full service (packing the WHOLE house, moving everything, etc.). The only thing they didn't move was mom's car. Dad flew back and drove it down.

We have a third company coming out tomorrow.
Yea I get the impression they rather quote for 8 hours rather than 4 and have people complain it took longer.
We have 3 movers. Do you think I should ask for a 4th?
The move in to new house is also slightly higher because the location is ānot localā and 10 miles out of their radius, which isnāt terrible to me.
Thanks for the reminder that we need to start calling movers, lol! I have a stack of postcards on my desk that started flooding in as soon as our house was listed as pending on the MLS.
Last year, we moved from three story 1,150 SF condo to a two-story 1600 SF house in the same zip code. It cost about $600 plus a $120 tip, and took five movers half a day.
I think in general people in Portland are underpaid compared with Chicago, where we also lived, which has almost exactly the same COL.
We paid about $4k to move from NYC to NNJ. Took two moving trucks. š« We had 4 movers (from a large 2 bedroom apartment in an elevator building following covid rules so took a loooong time to get everything out)

I would ask how much the cost would be to add one and then figure out how much it would save you in terms of ultimate time. Like weāre considering renting a minivan (or asking our friends if we can borrow their SUV) and making a few trips to the house to try to shave off some time since it would be hundreds of dollars saved.
First moved was at the end of June from the Seattle area to a city a few hours away. It was roughly $2400 including tips for all the guys. From 1394sq ft 2 story TH to 1300sq ft duplex rental. It was 6ish hours split over two day + 3.5 hours of driving. It was worth every penny. The moving company was great! I recommend them to all my Seattle area friends.
Second move was Dec 1st in the same city for roughly $1300. From the 1300sq ft rental to 2288sq ft SFH. I think it took 3.5 hours total? Two guys. That moving company bunged up a lot of our furniture and broke my dresser which I wasn't happy about.

I moved a few months ago, about 7 miles across town, it cost around $1700, western MA. My old house was a 3 bedroom ranch (~1700 sq feet) with a basement and garage. It took 3 guys about 7 hours, they had to take apart and put together some furniture like beds and desks. They charged by the guy/hr, so like $85 per guy per hour. I moved a bunch of my own fragile boxes ahead of time. Unfortunately, I ended up moving a lot of stuff I had planned to donate or sell, since my usual donation place is closed due to covid and I didn't feel comfortable connecting with buyers. That extra stuff drove up my cost a bit.
My costs were based on a family connection, and Iām also in Canada, but we moved June 2019 for $900. We tipped an additional $300. It took three guys 5 hours to move our prepacked boxes and furniture. One large truck one run, 20 minute drive between locations. Three person household in a 1700 sqft house.
The moving guy toured our house first to check the size of our furniture. We honestly donāt have much thatās large so that definitely helped.

Weāve considered that for certain items my H doesnāt want movers to touch. We just have to move it twice- once to his momās garage and then to the house 15 days later.
