We're trying to decide what to do in our two upstairs bedrooms - carpet or vinyl plank flooring.
The two bedrooms are the only rooms upstairs, so the flooring would cover two bedrooms and a tiny landing at the top of the stairs. The stairs are hardwood. The bedrooms and landing are currently carpet.
These rooms are for kids - they're bedrooms but also where they hang out and play, do arts and crafts, etc. We don't have a family room or playroom. This is their main space so the floor gets a lot traffic and the current carpet is pretty beat up.
I like the idea of carpet in the bedroom because it seems cozier, but the durability of something like the Lifeproof flooring is really appealing. We could always put down an area rug if we wanted to.
Cost is also a big factor. I don't want to spend a ton of money, but we will be paying someone to install it. We're not DIY people.
Our house has LVP upstairs (hallway, master bedroom, two kids rooms). It's the LVP that looks like hardwoods. At first I didn't love the idea of it (was installed by previous homeowners), but I've loved living with it the past two years. It's easy to clean and we've dragged furniture on it and you can't tell a thing. It looks brand new, like there's no wear and tear at all. There's one spot in the hallway where it looks like a couple pieces have shifted. (Like you can see a gap between the plank and the baseboard.) I blame that on shoddy installers though, not the quality of the product.
We have area rugs in the rooms and I have a runner in the hallway between our boys' bedrooms. Mostly to muffle the sound of the dog walking back and forth near their bedroom doors.
We're selling a house with carpet upstairs, and putting HW floors in the new house, including upstairs and in all the bedrooms. Our dog sleeps in our bedroom, and I swear our bedroom carpet has been the most puked-upon rug in the whole house. She tends to get into whatever during the day, and then come 3am, we hear the telltale sound of it coming back up. Then there's the possibility of kids being sick or having accidents. I used to be fully on board the "carpet in bedrooms" train, living in an area with cold winters, but parenthood has disabused me of that notion.
As between LVP and carpet I still think I'd choose LVP. My dad has LVP throughout his beach house, including bedrooms, and it's fine.
We have hardwood on our second floor and I much prefer it to carpet. We do have area rugs in the bedrooms to give them some sort of a soft surface, but I don't miss having carpet at all.
We had (old, creaky, 70's era) hardwoods on our second floor when we moved in. We put in carpet because it felt cozier and we preferred it in bedrooms pre-kids and animals. But now that it is time to replace it, I'm seriously considering LVP for the same reason as Susie: we have 2 cats and a dog who spend a lot of time in our bedroom and I feel like I spend half my life scrubbing puke out of the carpet (so gross).
We would still do area rugs for coziness, but I'm pretty sure our wall to wall days are behind us.
Hardwood all the way. We have hardwood throughout the house and in the girls bedroom have replaced the area rug 2x each now bc of kid and dog pee, poop, and barf. I can handle replacing a cheap rug every few years but not with carpet. I am so grossed out thinking of how much grossness is in it forever.

I would do LVP with large area rugs. We have hardwood in our master in this house, and that's the first time we've ever not had carpet. We thought we would miss carpet, but did a large bound remnant area rug that we got super cheap that covers most of the floor, and that is definitely my new preference because it's so much easier and cheaper to replace.

I would go with LVP. We have hardwood floors throughout our house. I find it so much easier to keep them clean compared to carpets. We have area rugs next to the beds in a couple of rooms, but I am fine without them, and we have the coldest room in the house in the winter.
We had non-luxury vinyl plank in 1 bedroom before we redid our upstairs. Without a rug, the beds slid on the floor every time the kids got in/out of them. So if you go that route I definitely recommend an area rug.

I’m probably the odd one put here, but I’d do low pile carpeting with area rugs in the potential messy areas. I’m not a fan of fake wood products next to real hardwood. This might not be an issue with your house, but I’d also do carpeting to muffle noise. I had hardwood uncovered and refinished in the upstairs of the last house we owned. It was gorgeous, but it was definitely louder for those downstairs, and that was just from the dog.

The very first thing I did when I closed on my house was rip the carpet out of the bedrooms. I prefer the look of wood anyway but also think carpets are not very hygienic. I’ve never regretted it.

Housegardenuk on Instagram has some great inspirational photos for rooms with carpeting. I’m still trying to decide whether to do hardwood/LVP/carpeting in our bedrooms. I love hardwood floors, but it might not add enough value to our house (and I’m hoping to sell in the next year or so). I was anti-carpeting at first, but after finding a lot of great looking rooms with it on that Instagram account (and the fact my kid far prefers carpeting to the hard surface flooring in our house), I’m not sure what I’ll decide.

We have carpet upstairs in all the bedrooms and the hallway. I love the coziness of carpet in the bedrooms but if durability is important, then I'd go with LVP.
I've lived in my new construction house for 6 months now. A carpet cleaning company is coming next week to clean our bedroom & H's office. Our cat was sick and barfed so much in those two rooms for the 2 months leading up to her death. Thankfully she stayed out of DS' bedroom or it would need cleaning too. So I vote not carpet.
