My son hates wearing swim trunks due to the mesh liner. I’ve tried both having him wear his underwear under his trunks or just board shorts, neither of which he liked.
I am looking at Fair Harbor swim trunks because they don’t have mesh, but they are spendy!
We don't own Fair Harbor as my son is fine with cheap $5 trunks from Walmart. His friend, however, won't wear mesh, and has been wearing a single pair of Fair Harbor trunks all summer. He wears them as regular shorts many days, so his mom feels they're getting their $$ worth. They remind me of Patagonia baggies with built in boxer briefs.

Good to know, thank you! We have 3 (Covid safety style) trips coming up where he’ll be swimming a lot so I went ahead and ordered a pair hoping we’d get our money’s worth.

Not sure if they have boy sizes but H has a pair of Speedo brand trunks with the boxer brief liner that I got off Amazon for less than $30. He's worn them maybe 15 times to the beach and the pool this summer and they've held up great to me washing them, etc.
They’re not technically swim shorts, but my kid has a bunch of “hybrid” shorts that can be used for swimming too. They aren’t lined. I think ours are Hurley or volcom, some kind of surf/skate brand.
Speedo makes them with a boxer brief soft lining. I got them for my husband and my boys this year. Speedo had kid sizes for sure. We also got ones like that at costco, Gerry brand, last summer. my boys prefer these to suits with the mesh lining.
You can't always tell which liner by the pictures included in the listing. The product description will mention "Inner stretch comfort boxer liner". (They have them in the younger boys section too, if you need a smaller size)
DS and DH also each have a pair from Fair Harbor. The quality is excellent. I didn't mind the price because DS is a slow grower (plus he takes swimming lessons year round), so we'll get a good two or three years out of them. But if you don't want to spend $$ the Kohls ones are just as good. DS likes the prints of those better actually.
