We run an in-home daycare. I had a kid wake up from nap on Monday with a runny nose. Very, very slight. I told mom at pick up. Both kids woke up Tuesday with coughs, so they stayed home and went for testing. Tests came back today. Both kids negative, but dad is positive. I didn’t even know dad wasn’t feeling well until they told us the test results this morning. Apparently he also began not feeling well Tuesday morning; mom thought he was being dramatic. He has cold symptoms, and is generally achy. Mom is being tested today, but she feels fine. Mom and dad are both vaccinated. So this is my first breakthrough case “in the wild” as opposed to just hearing about them. Thankfully because they kept their kids home appropriately yesterday, we do not have to close and await for test results.
Is it reasonable to think the kids are both false negatives? Even if they’re true negatives, is it reasonable to think they’ll still be negative a few days from now? Ugh. I’m so tired of Covid.
I know we are all frustrated with Covid. And sick policies and quarantining guidelines. Just know that because I am a hard ass about excluding for any symptoms, I now do not have to disrupt care for the rest of our enrolled families. I hope you all have similar experiences thanks to the diligence of your daycares! It is truly hard on me, but closing for two weeks would be much, much harder- for all of us involved.
Positive test for one of my 4-yr-old's teachers. Teacher is asymptomatic (and vaxxed) but now we all quarantine. This is the 3rd exposure for his classroom and none of them have resulted in spreading so far, but this is the first one since delta.

(ETA because I rudely didn’t address the most important part.) I’m so sorry. I hope everyone stays healthy and quarantine goes quickly. How did the teacher find out?
We do desperately need more data! How common is spread from an asymptomatic, vaccinated person? Could we be finding evidence of the virus that was attacked and killed by the vaccine, but still registers on the testing? (That’s my thought on all of the asymptomatic positives of people who have been vaccinated. I feel like eventually we’re not going to consider them breakthrough cases, but I don’t see actual data on that yet.)
Our family (grandparents, cousins, everyone) has had a trip to Yellowstone planned for months. We live in Salt Lake City, so close enough to the park for our local numbers to be relevant to those at the tourist centers. Today, Utah's positive rate climbed to a level we haven't seen since February. I just sent an email to my family that we probably aren't coming. We are all fully vaccinated except for three kids, one of whom is mine, who are too young. No vacation is worth this risk.
But as of Tuesday’s presentation, the district made it clear that it won’t mandate that students stay home if they have COVID-19. A student can be sent home if they have a fever of 100 or higher. The district strongly encourages that parents do not send kids to school if they are sick, if they have a fever, or if they have an onset of new symptoms.
“Increased expectation of students and staff to take personal responsibility for health-related decisions impacting both others and themselves,” is a key component of the return plan, according to McCord’s presentation.

Welp. If that is what CISD is doing then I guess all the Houston area districts are, too. It sounds like TEA isn’t allowing them to make kids with Covid stay home?! Yikess. Mixed feelings though because a 10 day quarantine would max you out on sick days. Then what? Ugh this is going to suck.
All of these discussions of no contact tracing (which I’m 95% sure is already set to happen in our school), 10 day quarantines (though if you don’t know you’re a contact, I suppose you don’t have to quarantine unless it’s family), later than expected vaccines, rising cases (7 day average for the state went from 70 to 200 in 3 weeks), virtually no masks being worn in schools or anywhere else, and known spread at camps/VBS programs that have similar set-ups to school…it all has me questioning if we made the right decision to send our kids back to in-person school this year.
But then again, I remind myself that last year, we stayed home to protect the most vulnerable and keep healthcare workers from being even more overwhelmed. Now the vast majority of the most vulnerable have had a chance to be vaccinated and with the nationwide vaccinations, the hospitals aren’t getting overwhelmed (with obvious exceptions). While my kids are now technically among “the most vulnerable” because they’re still unvaccinated, they’re the healthy kids that no one was super concerned about getting seriously ill last year. It doesn’t appear that their risk has actually gone up, but it feels that way because the risk for others has gone down.
Ugh. Exhausted. Ahh, to be the 2019 version of “mentally exhausted” again.
lilac05, I hear you. I am on the opposite end of spectrum. We have been out in this from virtually the beginning. My son even attended a essential workers summer camp last year because H and I needed to work in person. So I am not questioning sending my unvaccinated child, because he was in worse conditions last year. BUT I am so fucking frustrated this is still going on. If covid alters this next academic year my youngest will have been in school for more years with disruption than normal. He will be in 4th grade FFS.
Anyways this is where I am mentally. It has been 16 months. And although I am still scared I am unwilling to continue to hold my kid back from normal life. He has sacrficed so much. So now I have to accept the risk he might catch covid and weigh that with it being worth the normalcy he is finally getting to experience. Playing with friends, activities, seeing grandparents etc. It really sucks I have to do this because adults couldn’t get their shit together. But here we are.
I don’t know if this helps. But this is where I am at mentally.
Every time I have a conversation about COVID, my main point is, no one knows what the long term affects are. Our state finally came out with basically a non-guideline document that leaves it up locally and FB was full of no mask comments.
Except, kids under 12 can't get vaccinated. All of these kids that are sick and it's "mild" may or may not see long term effects. We have posters on here having long hauler symptoms for months and months.
Putting up with a mask, which they did all last school year, is the least of the issues. I was trying to find a similar issue and asbestos was the best I could come up with. So many people got sick from it and were ill prepared because they didn't realize the issues. While we do know the issues with COVID, we also know that people are idiots and don't believe science.
I want to give my kid some normalcy next school year. We didn't do any activities for safety reasons, but I want to be able to sign her up for something in the fall.
It's not the right word, but I am glad to see so many in the same camp I am. It's truly mental gymnastics over here every day or week.
Our gov is leaving it up to districts to decide on masking, though he did urge them to follow CDC guidelines. But there are a lot of batsh*t crazy people in my county that like to make a lot of noise about no masks. But I hope hope hope hope that we can mandate masks for at least elementary school aged kids. DD will wear one regardless, but it makes it so much easier if she sees others doing it.
And she's been back in her sport for awhile now. It's the only thing that has kept all of us sane for the last 8ish months. But I truly cannot wait to get her vaccinated and I second guess sending her all the time.

I'm so mad that they're leaving this up to the districts. My husband is currently calling the governor's office and the person he's talking with had no idea that Cooper is no longer mandating that masks be worn in school.
I'm so sorry for all of you (still) dealing with COVID confusion and illness. Ugh - it's definitely not over.
For those who are hearing of positive, asymptomatic vaccinated people, do you know why they were tested? Our school's current guidance for the fall (and summer school) is even if you are exposed, but are vaccinated, you do not need to quarantine or get tested unless you are symptomatic. I'm haven't seen an official CDC stance on this (exposed but vaccinated and asymptomatic) but maybe I missed it.

A local high school principal, 35 years old, father of four young kids, everyone who knows him said he was the posterchild of health, etc. just left the hospital yesterday after about 6 weeks. He was on a ventilator for about a month. Last rites were delivered when they thought he would succumb. Not vaccinated (mostly known from people who know him, but also the hospital had announced recently that none of their current covid patients were vaccinated).
So, obviously many people were thrilled to come see him rolled out in his wheelchair upon discharge yesterday. Local media was there and...so were so, so many maskless people. Both kids and adults. They were all crowded together but outside, so I think if everyone had worn masks it wouldn't have been a big deal. But you're in front of a fucking hospital where the workers had to work so hard to help keep him alive. The respectful thing to do outside of a hospital is, vaccinated or not, to put on a fucking mask. Luckily I wasn't the only one who commented noticing this when posted to social media, but it just told me that we have a long way to go. Our covid rates are increasing but our hospitalizations are steady thanks to comparatively high local vaccination rates, and while what this man went through was rare, I don't know how you look at this story and don't think "Ya know, maybe I should get vaccinated." Instead the same antivax people just believe God and the power of prayer was all that was needed (he's a Catholic high school principal).
PDQ as I may delete later depending on what happens with the school
I can’t imagine areas without mask mandates are going to be able to successfully keep masks in place.
Masks are required for all in childcare settings by our department of health. Clearly written out. The licensed childcare facility where we were going to do 4 weeks of summer camp just sent out an email blast for optional masking indoors— “at parental discretion” was the exact terminology.
They’re aware of the public health mandate but the coordinator claims she will not violate “personal rights” if a child removes his or her mask. she’s gaslighting several of us who are pushing back by saying their policy has always been “to the best of the child’s ability” and this represents no change. Luckily we have receipts, because no. That wasn’t the policy. And this isn’t about accommodating a few kids who have trouble adjusting. You’re dropping masks and were simple enough to put it in writing.

I am definitely frustrated with Cooper. I want him to require masks for elementary school at a minimum in the fall.
I am not sure what our school is going to do. So far they have been pretty good. They are still requiring masks inside for summer school.
If kids do need to stay home I am concerned about what the learning will be. Last year kids could sign into the remote class. However individual schools are not offering a remote option this fall.
atexan, I am sorry. BB's teacher tested positive last week after she started showing symptoms - and is vaccinated. She had to stay home and we got her tested on day 6 and she was fine. There was no spread in the classroom so I hope the same holds true for you. They are masked all day and I think that really does help.

The school makes them test every day. Thank goodness, because when I went to pick him up last night I found out that the school is not allowed to ask whether or not teachers are vaccinated. And of course, they can't require masks. So there have been unvaxxed, unmasked teachers with kids who are too young for the vaccine and also not super great at wearing masks correctly because they are babies.
My kid's teachers are all vaccinated (or so they've told me) and they are actually pretty good about wearing masks at least whenever I see them. But it's not like he doesn't interact with other teachers outside of his classroom sometimes.
I can't believe they're not even allowed to ASK whether teachers have been vaccinated.

I saw that this morning. I was supposed to go to SLC next Friday-Mon 8/2 to see immediate family I haven't seen in years. Cancelled this morning. I am so bummed.
Here in Houston cases are going up in a straight line - beyond exponential curve - it just isn't worth the risk.
Is it reasonable to think the kids are both false negatives? Even if they’re true negatives, is it reasonable to think they’ll still be negative a few days from now? Ugh. I’m so tired of Covid.
If they are doing the nasal swab test, it is completely reasonable that they could be a false negative. My own kid had trouble keeping the dang thing in her nose for the full 15 seconds, and it just isn't as reliable as the nasopharyngeal swab.

My friend is a principal of an elementary school in Conroe ISD. I'll see if i can get his take and report back.
Our district is making masks optional. I think that is bullshit. Given the rapid spread of Delta, our kids should all be masking at school, especially in Texas where vaccination rates aren't so high.
We had a patient die at our hospital who was vaccinated. The only one so far. But she had 2 variants of COVID as well so that may have come into play.
Vaccination is 96% with the best one. You still have to account for the 4% and it's worse when a whole bunch of incubators are walking around brewing new variants and spreading it around.
Add to it that if they are COVID positive they can still come to school!?! I'm pissed.
We have to go to an indoor event this weekend - so I bought BB kids sized KN95 masks.
Before buying adult sized masks for myself and my mom, I figured I should try it on to see how it fits. These friggin' masks fit better than any other adult sized mask I've bought LOL

There’s decent data that the mRNA vaccines limit transmission. There were several studies of healthcare workers (as they were one of the first groups to be vaxxed) and yeah, the thinking is that the second dose of vaccine boosts number of neutralizing antibodies in nasal cavity to kill off any virus so could just be collecting RNA from dead virus.
So far Seattle school district is saying that masks must be worn when students under the age of 18 are present regardless of vaccination status but that isn’t set in stone yet. I really hope they keep the mask requirement until all children are eligible for the vaccine.

can you share where you purchased it from? I have decision paralysis with all the places that may or may not be legit.

I’m still mad they took away the indoor mask mandates for vaccinated people. Even in my liberal, cautious city you go into stores and see tons of kids under 12 unmasked. Not to mention all the unvaccinated people who are lying and don’t care. And Pre-School just said due to APA recs and current daycare guidance kids over 2 should be wearing masks indoors…but they’ve never been required to do that before…and they didn’t enforce it today. I know everyone has fatigue from all the changes. We knew there were variants and things could get worse again with the vaccination %s we were at. It would have been way easier to keep the mask guidelines the same.

I got KN95 masks for DD from here. Sometime last year, the FDA had a list of authentic FDA registered masks, and this was on them. They just barely fit 7 year old DD, though, so they might be too big for younger kids.

I don’t usually follow the covid threads because it spikes my anxiety. But I’m so glad to see that I’m not the only one freaking out about masks not being required for kids who can’t be vaccinated. I’m so tired of the Covid dance and just want my kid and my students to have a normal-ish school year. If that means we all wear masks all year, then so be it.
And I want them to start calling them the “unvaccinated but eligible”. My kids are unvaccinated but not eligible; I don’t put them in the same category as mask holes and anti-vax.

Our district has officially announced the masks are required (as required by CA and by our county) for students indoors and parents are losing their ever loving minds. "They can go to the store, to amusement parks, movies and not have to wear a mask!" except all of those places are clearly signed that unvaccinated people 2+ must wear a mask indoors. Just because no one is screaming at you to leave doesn't mean it's OK. The picking and choosing of which rules you want to follow is mind blowing.
Our governor has not yet lifted his mask mandate for schools and medical settings and our legislators voted to extend his emergency powers until September (which was a bit of a thing but honestly it gives him an edge in keeping mandates in place). As of now, 50% of 12-15 year olds and 67% of 16-17 year olds have been vaccinated. I don’t think that’s high enough to remove masks in the middle school and high school. We’ll see where it is in a month. It was reported there was an increase in vaccinations this past week so maybe with the Delta news more people are getting it.
I did notice more people with masks than without when I was out grocery shopping today when the past couple times it’s been few wearing masks. I think people are getting concerned again.
