why the heck are there so many semi-final swimming races?? There are 4 (5 including IM) strokes & a ton of different distances...I have ZERO interest in the qualifiers & wish they had spent more time on any of the other dozens of events that get ZERO time on the nightly recap shows.
I just spoiled the women's gymnastics results for myself because they're killing me dragging this out and I want to go to bed. (C'mon NBC, you show 3/4 of the women's AA and then cut to, like, an hour of swimming?)
So thrilled for all the winners! I've been noticing and loving the sportsmanship too.
I’m so impressed that you must have found a bunker to hide in to avoid *any* spoilers since this morning lol.

I agree…and swimming is one of my favorite Olympic events to watch. It’s on a lot during the day, too. At least if it’s going to hog prime time, let the other sports get some air time during the day!

Simone just did a Q&A on her IG and she's still having the twisties. She showed a video on bars this morning and said they usually can take 2 weeks to get over.
Canada is obviously never a super winner during the summer Olympics, but we’re doing a pretty decent showing this year, and I just want to give a hell’s yeah! to all of our female athletes who are kicking ass and taking names.
Also if you are able to do so go track down the finals for the women’s whitewater kayaking last heat. It is wildly impressive.

And I am over here, like I want to watch the prelims too!! In my house we are VERY invested in all the races! I love how much coverage swimming gets, but I think NBC just doesn't do a good job of their coverage. They make it all so hard to find and watch! There has got to be a better option for watching the non big name sports.
Like if I was really into rowing or weightlifting - how would I even get to watch all that?

I see the Q&A but not bars video even though she refers to it in the answers.. I like her sense of written voice in the answers.
Twisties is (are) a really strange phenomenon. Totally nuts.

It was up right when I woke up been seems to be down already. It's on Twitter. Kind of a glimpse of what would have happened if she'd continued in the team finals. I'm glad she has a safe place to train to continue if that's what she wants.

I'm sure it could but the consensus from people who know gymnastics way better than I do is twisties seem to be something that happen to all gymnasts and they just happened here at the worst possible time.

I was pleasantly surprised. I figured it would be spoiled because everything has been, but I made it to dinner yesterday and hadn’t seen anything, so I was like, “Hey I get to actually watch something and be surprised!”
Then NBC was like, “Allow us to show you 36482648 swimming prelims before we show the last event of the all-around!” Bob Costas have mercy, I was too tired for that.

Could this be inner-ear related?
Twisties is not the same thing as vertigo. Both are physical symptoms, but vertigo's cause is physical and twisties cause is mental.
I'm sure it could but the consensus from people who know gymnastics way better than I do is twisties seem to be something that happen to all gymnasts and they just happened here at the worst possible time.
Gymnasts are moving through multiple planes of space and flipping and twisting at the same time, which will in fact mess with your vestibular system.
If all gymnasts do this, then all gymnasts can get the twisties.
Someone mentioned below that the twisties are described as mental while vertigo is physical.
Except..if you had a physical sense of losing your sense in space caused by even a momentary uncontrolled vestibular reaction..you would have a mental and emotional reaction..so the two are tied and its complex.
Also Grant Fisher got 5th place by only 2 seconds in his first Olympic 10k this morning 🤩

Oh wow, did anyone else see the story of runner Emily Infeld's stalking ordeal? It's terrifying. I'm glad her stalker is finally in custody (hopefully he will get the help he obviously needs), but it's heartbreaking to think that the stress of all that may have been what kept her from qualifying for the Olympics this time around.

Cricket bowlers (pitchers) describe similar issues called the yips. It's taken some professional bowlers out of the game entirely because they can't get over it. But for them, it's not putting their bodies at risk, just making it harder to actually bowl (pitch) in a way that is workable as a professional. It's all very much a mental thing and can be worked through with a sports psychologist sometimes (which is growing in many fields).
I totally get the idea of the twisties. So much of these gymnastics skills and timing rely on muscle memory built up from hours and hours of practice. And when your body is used to doing something one way it can be very difficult to suddenly override that, even if you're trying to override it with another skill you can do perfectly. Taking a step back was the right decision.
Three of the members of the US epee team wore pink masks to protest their fourth teammate Alen Hadzic being on the team. If you look him up just know there's a trigger warning.

If you have access to the NBC Sports app, I’ve been able to find a lot there. I search/filter by sport.

Thanks for sharing. What a terrifying ordeal. Her ultimate statement about not wanting him to be punished is deeply compassionate. I agree, but it is easy to agree when I’m not the one who was living in terror. But his mom? Her, I’m willing to hate! I am in despair that this country will ever transform healthcare. We are killing ourselves. 😩😩😩
Christ on a cracker, my marriage cannot survive another US X Canada Olympic semifinal! Hoping that this time the ref will decide to instead call the US on some completely bizarre, practically-never-used rule. Still salty about London.
Pommel horse question - why do the men wear footsie pants for this event? Anyone know?
Because bare legs can get scratched up or stuck to the leather.
Also because the Code of Points mandates long pants for pommel horse, rings, high bar, and parallel bars. Pants are optional for floor and vault (meaning gymnasts can choose between pants and shorts). Certain colors are prohibited.

It left me wondering how common this issue is for high-profile female athletes.

Truly disgusting.
“German coach Patrick Moster was heard on camera yelling: ‘go catch the camel drivers’ as he offered encouragement to Nikias Arndt from the sidelines. Lagab was one of four riders ahead of Arndt on the course, the others being Eritrea's Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, Iran's Saeid Safarzadeh, and Ahmad Badreddin Wais, a Syrian refugee who was representing the Refugee Olympic Team. “
