Three of the members of the US epee team wore pink masks to protest their fourth teammate Alen Hadzic being on the team. If you look him up just know there's a trigger warning.
TW!
"USA Fencing created a "safety plan" to keep Hadzic away from women and out of the Olympic Village, which included him traveling and staying separately from his teammates.
He was also forbidden from practicing with women teammates."
This is... wow. How incredibly fucked up that they bent over backward to allow this piece of shit to compete.
Floor too? I read vault and uneven bars. Either way, I’m so proud of her. While this has to be heartbreaking to a point for her, she’s an inspiration and I love her even more now.
And the USWNT needs to learn to stay on-side. 🤦♀️ They’re killing me!!

“German coach Patrick Moster was heard on camera yelling: ‘go catch the camel drivers’ as he offered encouragement to Nikias Arndt from the sidelines. Lagab was one of four riders ahead of Arndt on the course, the others being Eritrea's Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, Iran's Saeid Safarzadeh, and Ahmad Badreddin Wais, a Syrian refugee who was representing the Refugee Olympic Team. “

Things like this combined with things like how Brianna McNeal has been treated I think are what has me not as into the Olympics this year.

What an asshole. It sounds like US Fencing is alleging that they aren’t able to stop him from competing according to their rules (since he won the arbitration and earned the spot through competition scores.)
That said, the fact that his own teammates clearly believe the allegations, and that ALL the other US fencers signed letters opposing his involvement signals to me that he is a known dbag of epic proportions. Of course people SHOULD believe women, but I cant recall a time it was so unanimous and resounding. That speaks volumes to me about what kind of a person this guy is.
I wonder if Simone is trying to change her floor and beam routine to remove twists. Seems doable on beam, but I'm not sure on floor.
I've been wondering this. She commented on her IG about taking the twists out for the tour. Maybe it's doable to go all in and rework one routine. Hopefully whatever she does is on her terms.

I think so much of it is the degree of difficulty component. They are never going to throw their hardest tricks on a tour because they don’t want to risk injury so it’s no big deal to simplify the routine even more if needed. I don’t know enough about gymnastics to know if she can have a competitive routine without twists. I would assume more so on the beam than the floor. But at the end of the day,I agree that I hope she is able to do what she wants/needs to and on her own terms.
Anyone watching the mixed swimming medley? This is a bit crazy.
It was so fun! I'm excited for this to be a thing.
Poor Lydia though
They shouldn't have put her in breast. We were the only team with a female breaststroker, but our fastest male breaststoker had just been in a different event. Dressel should have been in fly. It was a weirdly constructed team for sure.

Did anyone watch skateboarding? I'm just catching up, but the commentators are not american, so I don't know if it showed there. At first I wondered how it was a sport, but as I watched, I thought of halfpipe and fully think it should be included.

I mean maybe. But the gap between Jacoby and Michael Andrew’s breast stroke times in their event finals was less than the gap between Dressel and Huske in the fly and the gap between Dressel and Weitzel in the free. I think part of the problem is that the US doesn’t have an outstanding female 100 free swimmer. I’m sure the coaches considered more than just Olympic event finals times but on the surface you can see why they made the decisions they did.

I watched it last week, I think I commented above about it? Anyway, I found it kind of boring. I don’t know why they don’t do the half pipe.

I must have missed it in this long thread. Did you watch with commentary? I think it would be boring without these brits telling me all the details. ETA Yes I've been spoiled to the winners. That doesn't make it less fun to watch.
Can we not call other cultures' traditions weird? It's pretty disrespectful to an important and meaningful ceremony.
You are absolutely correct. I definitely did not choose my words wisely and for that I apologize.
I love the tradition of it and the beauty but fierceness of the motions and language combined. I found the above video lovely as the emphasis has always seems to be on the men performing the haka and not showing the women nearly as often.

There’s only 350+ replies, I don’t know how you could’ve missed it! 😉
The commentary I had was not British, but I could see how that would make it better!
