1. Minnesotans who win 2. Unexpected people win (like that Austrian cyclist or the Tunisian swimmer) 2.5 Countries winning their first medal 3. USA
2 & 2.5 are basically tied.
I'm not even Alaskan but I'd include small or unusual states winning events (like if a skiier from Hawaii won gold lol), because that reaction from Alaska was everything.
We small state people (I know, I don't live there anymore but it will always be my state) get excited about our people winning even the sports we might be "expected" to win, at least compared to other U.S. states. I still get a little teary when I think about Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins winning the gold in the xc ski relay.
Re. Simone, she is still absolutely amazing. I was a pretty competitive athlete once (nowhere near her level) and the pressure of being expected to win is really hard, and then you add everything else she is representing on top of "just" being the best in her sport... Not many people could do it with the same courage and grace that she has shown.
Bummer, but they did their best under crazy circumstances. I hope they can put this behind them for the individual events.
Fun fact - Great Britain is the first team that isn’t USA, China, Romania or Russia/Soviet Union/Unified Team to win a medal in this event in 33 years.

I was so upset that people are going after Simone. Dude, she's doing insane moves where, if she's not fully present in the moment, she could die or be paralysed for life. If she feels she's not on, then she's preserving her life in a very, very good way. I support her as a therapist (who used to do sports psychology in my first year or two of counselling life).
Besides Simone’s withdrawal, what was some of the other weird stuff?
As an Olympic random, I’m not sure if most Americans would know this, but Svetlana Khorkina (who was always a pain in the ass) has been an entire bitch the last year.
I posted that before I actually watched - it was based on weird text updates from my friend about Simone possibly leaving the building and stuff. Now, not so weird obviously.
OMG I was listening to the Blind Landing podcast and was like "Wow, I wonder what Svetlana Khorkina is up to these days now that they mentioned her" and then I saw her comments about the USA gymnastics scandal and I was like fuuuuuuuuck her.
oh! I forgot she was shit talking Simone too! That double doubles and such are circus gymnastics.
What is that obnoxious high putched whistle noise every few seconds during swimming? I had to turn off the games because it was setting me on edge
Swimmers can’t hear cheering while they are swimming. However, for breaststroke, the swimmer’s entire head leaves the water and they can hear for that brief moment while they take a breath. The stroke is also very quiet and less splashy in comparison to the others. Coaches and fans tend to cheer louder or in rhythm with their stroke because they think the swimmer can hear them.
You may hear it a bit with butterfly, too, since heads also come out with each breath. But typically they aren’t breathing every stroke and fly has a ton of splash which cuts down on what the swimmer can hear.
In distance races, we used to stand at the end of the pool and scream when the swimmer came in to do a turn. So many faces all raging at you at every turn. It was an experience!
EDIT - the best race of my life was when I was 10. Lol, yes. It was 25m fly in our championship meet. Everyone cheers, but I could see my coach screaming at me as she ran down the length of the pool. I couldn’t hear a thing, but knew she was screaming her head off and telling me to go faster. So I did. Blew my whole heat away. My coach walked over to my mom and said to put me in year-round swimming; I was going places. Whatever cheering the fans do is felt by the swimmers and they appreciate it!
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
ok. so watching the gymnastics final now. She was off in warm ups. The camera was on her when she told her coach She didn't trust herself. Once you don't trust your body to do what it was trained to do, it is over. She made the decision that was best for the team. let them step up without her messing it up more or worse, hurting herself.
she made the right call, which is why the coaches, her team, and all athletes who have commented on this supported her. They know.

It was so sad and her eyes looked like they were rolling around in her head in the air. It was so hard to watch.
. I don’t know what it’s bugging me so much that the GOAT would say peace out in the middle of a team event. But yeah, it does.
Dude. You actually typed this out and hit enter?
And, as you keep reading, you see that I also took a step back and said I was thinking about everything said. And yes, as the day had gone on, I understand it a lot more. But dude, if you are trying to change someone’s mind, this is not the way to do it.
I get it now. This quote was about 15 minutes after the world heard what happened. My initial reaction was the same it is for most people who quit in the middle of something. And I have since read a bunch of pieces on her and the decision. So I get it now.
Watching it now I 100% see why Simone decided not to continue. She was definitely off during the warmups. watching her on the vault was hard to see. I hope she is ok and feeling supported by everyone. I can’t begin to imagine the pressure she must’ve felt.
But holy cow watching Jordan and Suni on bars - they are both amazing!!

Catching up on the performances now. You could see the fear/terror in Simone's face on the vualt...it was like she panicked in mid-air and it was obvious something was really off. The moves she does are really, really dangerous & I imagine you could easily paralyze yourself if you made an error. I understand why she pulled out of she felt like something was mentally/physically off. I hope she has peace about it & can return for the individual if she is up for it.
It seems like these Olympics are full of upsets and surprises. I think the pandemic and the delayed year and the no crowds/family is really messing with the athletes and their stress levels.

I’m not a close follower of gymnastics so hopefully no one will ruin her for me, but I’m really loving jordan. She has such a positive spirit about her:

I’m really worried about most of the gymnasts’ hairlines. I understand that you need to keep your hair out of your face, but most of these ponytails look so painful.

Another one chiming in to say that once I saw the vault I 100% understand why she stepped back. I was sympathetic just reading about it earlier but that video was scary and I’m glad that she managed to land it without injuring herself.

When I saw it this morning (they didn’t do any replays of her vault in the morning showing for some reason), I was shocked she landed it at all. The slowed down replays were honestly scary.

and I apologize to Simone for questioning her.
Oh, I’m not trying to change your mind. Most initial reactions were concern whether she was injured or sick. You clearly view the matter differently. I’m reasonably certain Simone doesn’t care about your view, through. As Venus Williams said, anyone questioning can't do what she can, so no one’s doubt dims her light.
Does anyone know what happens if Simone chooses not to compete for the individual events? Will it go to the alternatives or to the US competitor who was prevented from moving forward because of the 2 per country rule, but scored higher than the alternative?
I read something yesterday (?) about Mykayla Skinner and it said something like "she's done unless something unforeseen happens to [names of other gymnasts]."

I think this about Ariana Grande and Jojo Siwa too.
This recorded airing of gymnastics was the worst ever. They didn’t show anyone except Russia and the US. 😠
Ugh yes! The battle for bronze was between 4 teams!
If you have the NBC sports app, you can watch this morning's replay, which was more evenly covered. I prefer Bridget Sloan and John Roethlisberger's commentary to Nastia and Tim.

I will check it out tomorrow. Nastia and Tim are doing nothing for me. 🙁
