I am fucking pissed there is no way to record the live airing of the full competition.
I feel like with all the technology and apps and stations it should be much much easier to watch what I want.
I had this thought on Saturday.
I was watching the men's gymanstics qualifying and it randomly split screen to 4-5 swimming races. It was brilliant, but random and not under my control.
You should be able to click on 4 streams to show on your screen and then control what audio you are listening to. I'd watch a lot more random sports that way.
This recorded airing of gymnastics was the worst ever. They didn’t show anyone except Russia and the US. 😠

I have hated NBC's Olympics coverage for years. They're awful.
I've been watching either live or recorded from the live version online through NBColympics.com. It's not the best, but it's much better than what they show on tv. During the qualifiers for gymnastics they had Australian commentators and it was so much nicer than the American commentators; they didn't talk through everything and when they did talk they were much quieter. It was very pleasant.
On the NBC Olympics website you can still watch the non-American focused coverage. It doesn't show everyone, but they do show the Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and Great British contestants sometimes too.
And speaking of random sports - I feel like Dressage is the oddest summer Olympic sport.
I usually try to watch the dressage. I competed in show jumping at a very high level but I have taken some dressage clinics and I know how difficult it is, and I have huge respect for dressage riders. But all I can think when they canter around the ring before entering is "go on, just jump that tiny barrier!" Even I have trouble following the rounds and scoring. I can't imagine trying to watch it as the average spectator.
I've always thought about the long-term physical sacrifices that any athlete makes to get to the Olympic level- their bodies endure insane things & they give up so much of their normal lives to compete at that level. I've rarely thought about the mental/emotional harm that comes to them and how they will probably always have regrets or 2nd thoughts the rest of their lives (if they didn't win gold). I hope that Simone is OK both with whatever she is dealing with and her decision to pull out.
Does anybody know if she was out warming up or practicing? She seemed to allude to it mostly being a mental issue instead of a physical one.

I am using the NBC app to watch replays. Multiple camera options, full replays, can sort by sport. I watched 3+ hours of surfing finals coverage last night.

I saw coverage last night where Nastia Luikin was talking with Mike Tirico about Simone, and Nastia said that 12 some hours out from pulling out of the team event, Simone was headed to the gym to work out. However, that was before Simone pulled out of the all around competition.
I have the CBC Olympics app and it lets you watch full events by sport. To some extent it’s a little overwhelming. For instance the surfing videos are each 10+ hours long since it’s a full day of recording and commenting.
You’ll also have Canadian commentary which is just delightful.
Ellie Black just pulled out of the all around gymnastics competition as well. I feel so badly for any top tier athlete who is unable to compete once they get to the Olympics. So heartbreaking for them. .

I feel this way about modern pentathlon - fencing, swimming, show jumping, pistol shooting, and cross country running.
I like to hate watch the modern pentathlon jumping portion. It's often TERRIBLE if you're used to watching actual show jumping with horse-rider teams who have trained together for years. Get on strange horse! Get around course! Good luck!
But I also used to joke that my sister should try it. She fenced briefly in college, can shoot, runs, swims ok, and rides (though her sport of choice is dressage not jumping). Sadly she didn't stick with the fencing and apparently thought I was joking when I wanted her to have Olympic aspirations.
I discovered so many new Olympic sports when I was home during the day a few Olympics ago like kayaking and open water swimming. I was hoping with streaming there would be increased opportunities to watch all of those types of events, but it actually seems to be worse and just bunches of clips instead.

We have a Roku tv and xfinity basic, basic cable - like literally just network channels. We were able to download the Olympics app on the Roku and when we logged in with xfinity we’ve been able to watch full replays of every event as well as the live events. Not sure if this helps anyone.
It will spoil you if you care about that - the top row is the highlights - so Like watch x win gold in blank.
I'm not even Alaskan but I'd include small or unusual states winning events (like if a skiier from Hawaii won gold lol), because that reaction from Alaska was everything.
We small state people (I know, I don't live there anymore but it will always be my state) get excited about our people winning even the sports we might be "expected" to win, at least compared to other U.S. states. I still get a little teary when I think about Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins winning the gold in the xc ski relay.
ILs went to HS in AK (spouse was born there), and though most have moved away, the diaspora (ILs and their friends) was all over my FB feed celebrating.

If you’re up at 4:30 am, you can (this is how I’ve been watching) lol!
Yeah I am frustrated with the coverage. I'm home during the day right now and want to watch stuff like weightlifting, kayaking, other random sports. On TV, it's usually tennis, bball or volleyball. Those are fine but I want to watch a variety. I said "weightlifting" into my remote and it gave me a minute and a half clip of just the gold medal winner's clean and jerk lol OK
. I don’t know what it’s bugging me so much that the GOAT would say peace out in the middle of a team event. But yeah, it does.
Dude. You actually typed this out and hit enter?
I feel like..to be fair rubytue ALSO went on to say that she was surprised and bothered by her thoughts?
Idk, it seemed kind of obvious to me that maybe she had some kind of unexplored belief or bias that seeing Simone Biles drop out made her question and become self aware of.
I get it, it wasn't exactly pretty, but if I read the posts she was also like "oh, I wasn't expecting that reaction from myself, what is that?" Maybe I'm wrong and she's like "nope, I'm good..no one should EVER quit!"

But that doesn't sound like her, or the thought.
Simone’s decisions are part of what we mean when we say Black Lives Matter. So I’m going to take issue with someone being bothered by Black women’s survival decisions.
