We're moving in about two weeks, and the house doesn't have a pantry. To one side of the fridge there's about 22 inches, so I can definitely find something to fit there, but then the owner took out the built in desk, so it's a free for all. I'm not in any hurry, so I want to design specific for our use and not necessarily an "out of the box" idea. Dimensions are 59" wide, 39" deep and 10' high
Things I know I want: 1. Bottom part I'd like to have it where we store the dog food and their bowls. Maybe like a slide in/out type thing? Possibly like to get trash/recycle in there as well. 2. Top part we'll probably drywall a "soffit" to put a tv up on b/c I have no desire to store anything over 6 feet and we do have plenty of storage elsewhere. Plus one of the main points of the move was to purge and downsize, so I know the more storage I have, the more stuff I'll get to fill it with! 3. Want it to be able to close, but not a fan of bi-fold doors. I was thinking a track and two doors, but I don't think that will work with the size of the walls on the sides.
Or, any other ideas for its use?
If I bought a 22 inch piece for the side of the fridge, I honestly won't NEED another pantry space. If we "rebuilt" the desk, even as a coffee bar of sorts, it would just become a catch all for stuff. Plus I'm the only one that drinks coffee and since our master has a big covered deck off of it and my desk will be up there for a few months, I'll probably just keep the coffee pot upstairs.

That alcove says to me put in shelves and a door. A 22 in space by the fridge sounds small for a pantry, but if that size is good for you then I'd make the alcove a closet for vacuums, brooms etc and still put in shelves. Rarely do people have too many closets.

I’d definitely make the bigger space a pantry. The cheapest thing to do would be to add closet doors and use a closet shelving system inside. However with that deep of a closet you may feel there is wasted space. To maximize space, put shelves for small bottles / containers mounted to the inside of the doors (with a lip on it so things don’t fall off when the door moves), make the back shelf 16-18” deep and wrap shelves around the sides.
If you want to do custom millwork, I’d do slide out lower cabinets to keep air tight garbage containers in (they make ones for dog food). It could also be used for recycling or something on one side. Do you have a built in trash or recycling somewhere else? It’s nice to have one where you do the cooking but if that has to be small, I’d put larger ones here in pull out drawers. I’d do a row of drawers above that and then have the upper part be cupboards similar to the closet concept. You may want more slide out features for those shelves though, because you”ll have to be able to reach over the lowers to get to the back of the pantry. Next to the fridge, I’d rather have a tall cupboard for items like mops and brooms, or put some shelves inside and use it for small appliance storage.
I love a big pantry cabinet so that's what I would do with the big space.
I definitely would not put back a desk.
If you don't want a pantry, you could do: -Bottom: pull out trash/recycle which is typically 24" + remaining 35" open shelf for dog bowls (see example below) -Top: tile backsplash with a shelf and TV
