We have old school toggle light switches and the white plates the builder put in started turning red/pink in streaks across the plate. We tried replacing them with other basic ones we bought at Home Depot, but the same thing is starting to happen to those, too. DH says it has something to do with UV affecting the plastic, I think.
Anyway, seems like we might need to go beyond basic, though I'm still hoping not to shell out a lot--I mean, they're switch plates, not exactly a big design element. Any suggestions on where to shop or specific ones to shop for?

No link because they don't seem to sell it at Lowes anymore, but I have used plain white ceramic ones. They looked nice and never changed color. Amazon seems to have a bunch of options.
I'm pushing in on this thread for a related question ... I have a double switch plate that uses one side for a light switch for my basement and the other side with an indicator that the light is on. Where the switch would be, there's a red plastic insert and a light behind it.
Great. Love it. Can't figure out what to call it so I can find replace plates.

Is the hole in the plate the same size as a regular light switch?

Yes. It's like the plastic thing is just an insert into the hole that would usually be another light switch. Photos below with the light on and off (with wildly different coloration for my wall paint, for whatever camera reasons).
