We want to replace our normal, keyed door knob with one that has a keypad and locks automatically. We do not have a deadbolt on the door, it's just a lock in the handle.
Any recommendations for a good version or brand to look at?
I'm planning to do the same thing on our exterior laundry room door. In the past I've always bought Schlage door handles, knobs, and locks, so that would be my go-to.
Schlage. They have a variety of options, one will fit your needs. We have them on all of our exterior doors. The door to our garage doesn't have a deadbolt (attached garage).
We have Yale and have had them on all 3 of our houses. We love them. I don't know their quality or availability in the US, but definitely will never have a door lock without this. We can put in temporary or long-term codes, which works great for having workmen and our dog walker.
We just got a Schlage one and I love it! The keypad is on the deadbolt, but I assume they have other kinds. Before, we always had a key above the back door because I never carried my house key around with me lol.
We have two of the Schlage ones for our front and side doors. One with buttons and the other has a flat digital keypad. We had to buy the digital one because the one with buttons had too large of a profile and our screen door handle kept bumping the buttons. I purchased the Schlage ones because DD had trouble using a key. We also lived in a neighborhood where it was pretty important to always have your doors locked - although I think that should be important for everybody.
I just bought a Lockly deadbolt for a family that I'm helping set up their house. The Lockly one uses a fingerprint and connects to Wi-Fi so you can set different codes for different people. The Lockly set is expensive and probably more complicated than I would like. I have a friend that loves it though.
If you’ve got a screen door, take note on the depth of the lock when you’re shopping. Our first lock was too thick and it kept the screen door from being opened. It took us awhile to figure out why the screen door was always “locking” itself when there was nothing to see when I was working on it. Finally I realized that the handle of the screen door was hitting the lock when both doors were closed! We were able to find a different one that worked. I think both were Schlage.
