So much going on, it feels weird to randomly babble. But, here I am. Maybe fishing for some optimism for my personal life.
it’s been 8-ish days since I hurt my back. It’s progressed to sore. This is an improvement from shooting pain. But still annoying. It’s one of the longest time that I can recall that Ive had pain, and my head is fucking with me that it’s never going to go away. It’s been a stair step recovery. 4 days where I could not move (or had shooting gasping pain when I did). 4 days where it hurt to move, but could get through it. And today, I just feel sore. But I’m still convinced I’m broken forever.
Also, why is it so hard to call contractors for estimates? I have a list of house projects, and I just can’t get up the energy. Nerve. Something, to start making calls. *sigh*
Can I brag and then navel gaze? I could NEVER say the things below out loud with out dying.
I did a presentation for about 40 new faculty today - and can I say that I nailed it? Great questions, great engagements, laughing, lots of people came up to me to say it was really useful, and the best session of the day, lots of follow-up emails for further conversations.
Presentations are one of my strengths, and one of the main reasons I'm successful at my job - which is only about 10% presentations but about 60% relationship building - so they play into each other. But it's also my biggest source of imposter syndrome. I don't understand why I'm successful at this aspect of my job, which makes me feel that I could lose it at any time. So every presentation is nerve-wreaking and I spend so long prepping for them because I feel like one day ... I just won't be good any more, and people will realize that it was all an act.

This! I want to give someone like 30k for a kitchen remodel and I can't get anyone to call me fucking back. And when they do they don't leave a message so I don't know if it's the kitchen company or the guy trying to sell me a timeshare!

Ha! I was posting this in your thread, when it went poof. So here you go: Jinx! 😂 (I suspect we were posting at the exact same time)
Go just! You are awesome! If it is just an act, does it matter as long as you are a good actor? People make careers out of that, and some really aren’t good. (I then debated listing off some bad actors, but I’d probably get flogged).

I’m just trying to make the initial call. Like, my friend gave me his tree guy’s number a week ago. It shouldn’t be hard, but it is.

just that's awesome! Faculty can be weird to do stuff like that with, so that's awesome that you got such great feedback! I always feel like they are going to judge me on stuff like that too. But faculty are people with imposter syndrome, too. I'm glad it went well today!
rubytue I am much better at initiating work that does not require a phone call. If you have a website or email, sign me up! I actually did work with a contractor recently for a minor project who both communicated electronically AND was prompt and reliable. It felt like a miracle. If someone gives me a rec with a phone number there is about a 99% chance I will never call.
wildrice , yes! Our last roof did everything by email. I never once spoke to him. I’ve emailed him to see if he does the work we need. But that’s all I have been able to do.
my biggest peeve is online contact us forms where you fill it out, and they call you back. 🙄

just, as someone who studies and works with clients on those issues of imposter syndrome, I can assure you that you will never lose those skills - you can get too much in your head and then not be able to perform the skills, but you have them and, as long as you keep out of your head, you'll be able to use them for life.
I called the tree guy. He didn’t answer, so I left a voice mail. Almost the same as a web contact us form 😂
Baby steps. Next up: Sliding glass doors Concrete Tile
I almost just want a general contractor. But, I have an unemployed H who is in the trades and can do almost everything. And he says he wants to GC is. But, he hates calling people more than me.
Honestly, why are phone calls so hard? I'm truly curious, maybe I'll try to find out if there's been anything written about the psychology behind it. Like, obviously email/text is the best, but I'd really rather walk into a building and ask someone a question face-to-face than make a phone call. Why? lol
Work put out the results of a survey they did regarding a new telework/hybrid policy. In the published results there is one section that very clearly calls for the resignation of one of the Directors. I'm wondering if they (aka work and not the consultants who put the results together) meant to leave that in or they just didn't catch it.

I feel like there’s a generational divide here, too. My grandmother calls for everything, even when it would truly be easier through writing or if the info is on the website. Nope, phone call. So that’s now how I am. H will try to find something out by looking at websites, instagrams, Twitter feeds, etc. to see if it’s already been asked and answered and I’m like Jesus Christ, just gimme the phone and I’ll call and ask! And he always looks horrified. Lol.

What did people have to say about telework?
Half the workforce responded to the survey. Of the respondents, 90% want to keep hybrid conditions with flexible work hours and flexible on site office hours. 60% indicated through the survey that they would look for other jobs elsewhere if forced to come into the office as before (huge issue currently is we are not retaining employees). 80% of the managers responding (no percentage on how many of the people taking the survey were managers) said they were comfortable with a hybrid environment. It goes deeper from there, but there is a pretty strong sentiment that we need to keep a telework option.

Here is my issues with calling and receiving a phone call. 1. It is an interruption. You either have to filter the call or be annoyed with the person for interrupting you. I also fear interrupting others. 2. No documentation, this is huge for my job. If you are going to call and tell me something I am going to tell you to email me. I can't be expected to just hold things in my brain. Same if I am working with like a contractor. I need to be able to refer back to our conversation. 3. I can't see your face. I don't know if you are annoyed/happy/sad. That is why phone calls are my least favorite form of communication.
And yes phone calls seem to be an older generation thing. Which makes me even more annoyed with them lol.
FWIW, having dealt with contractors, they are out and about all day and don't have time to answer emails. Office staff for contractors is in short supply and often done by family members. So if you want something done you have to call the contractor, and then get an estimate/contract to have it done. Sometimes you just have to meet the people where they are to get things done.
My H was inspecting the outside of our house before the tropical storm remnants get her and discovered that our sunroom is basically rotting off. We knew we had some rotting under a sliding door, but, the sill plates under all the windows… gone! He lifted a piece of siding an a chunk of wood fell out. This is fitting given my reluctance to call contractors. *sob* *sob*
But dude, when he was working, he was tight with a carpenter who had a GC license. I kept nagging him to stay in touch (my H is the worst at maintaining friends). He didn’t. Now it’s 8 months later and that is really our best hope at this point. Not sure if the window/door guys I’m calling can do this.

Logically, I realize this. I just need to work up to it. 😂 And I wish we weren’t in home repair bonanza time when it was a bit more of them wanting our business vs today’s crazy times.
