What were their symptoms? I know it’s been done but looking for recent experiences! Also anything to do at home while you wait results. He is really upset about wearing a mask at home even though he’s normally very mask compliant so we have the windows open, 2 air purifiers running, and my husband and I are trying to stay 6’ away with KN95s on (we are both vaccinated with Moderna but 7m post-second dose). My son (5.5) woke up with a runny nose at his grandparents. He asked to come home because he didn’t feel well which is super odd for him. He also has a cough and just is laying around all day, no energy. His has a low fever, is complaining chills, and visibly shivering (he’s currently in flannel PJs with a heavy blanket and open windows). We just went for a PCR test and while waiting in line he projectile vomited all over the car (like….everywhere). Poor thing. I did an Binax Now when we got home and it was negative.
Well, it may or may not be. I wouldn't make him wear a mask in his room with the door closed and window open. And if the weather permits I'd allow him to sit outside unmasked as much as possible. Good luck! I hope it's just a flu. Poor guy.

He isn’t in a mask! I would rather he wear one when we are in the room but it’s not worth a fight over it, especially when he doesn’t feel well and we are both vaccinated and using other mitigation measures (windows, purifiers, and KN95s). I hope it’s something else, too!
Oh good. LOL I couldn't tell from how I was reading your post. I was thinking yesterday about how sad I am for our kids that they can't have just a regular cold anymore without us all freaking out about Covid. Sigh. I'll be so glad when they can be vaccinated.
A negative rapid test on a symptomatic kid is a pretty good indication it’s likely not covid, according to my pedi.
Anyway my then 14 year old had covid in January. Her first symptom was a headache (but she gets a lot of headaches). The next morning she woke up not feeling well. She was maybe a little congested. Mainly just lethargic and didn’t feel well. Throat hurt. Headache continued. After a few days it progressed into bad backache and then achy legs. Sore throat and headache persisted through it all. As did lethargy.
She never had a fever, never had a cough, never lost taste or smell. We got her tested because the morning she woke up not feeling well her boyfriend at the time woke up with loss of taste and smell so we were pretty sure she’d been exposed. He got his test results a few hours before her. Both were positive.
We did literally nothing in our house to keep it from spreading (assuming we’d already all been exposed). No one else got it. Health department said to lock her in her room for 10 days and leave food outside her door. And if she had to come out of her room for any reason everyone needed to mask. And they said that her bathroom needed to be just for her or it needed to be completely wiped down and sanitized every time she used it. I told them that wasn’t going to happen. They told me I was gonna die and so was my DH. The health department people are super sweet (sarcasm). Anyway, my DD also suffers from depression so isolating her for 10 days was seriously not an option, like at all. The risk of getting covid was much smaller (apparently non-existent), but the risk from the depression with isolation was pretty big.
Sounds like what my son had - we did the covid test (PCR and Binax ones and all were negative). It was just a bad cold (possibly RSV). It’s a week later and he’s still coughing but he’s much better overall and eating better too.

I’m sorry your daughter was ill but good news on what the pedi said and none of you getting sick!

I’m glad he’s on the mend! How long was he out of school?
DD2 recently had covid and her symptoms were runny nose, cough and her eyes were red/watery. Her PCR test was about 24hrs to turn around to confirm. Honestly it sucked but her symptoms didn’t get much worse so we were really lucky she made a quick and full recovery and no one else in the house (including too young to be vaccinated DD1) got it.
ETA: no one in the house including her wore a mask indoors during that time. I tried to spend 99% of the time with the kids outside but otherwise didn’t make anyone stay apart. I would personally not choose to mask inside with him unless there is another concern (someone high risk or immunocompromised etc)

We all had it right after Christmas. I’m not sure what strain it was.
16 yo: she developed a mild backache and was tired for an afternoon about a day or so after testing. 14 yo: mild cough, scratchy throat, congestion 11 yo: same as 14 yo. Both fully recovered after four to five days. 6 yo: she had a mild headache and slept for half the day shortly after we found out. She bounced back later in the day. 3 yo: completely asymptomatic
Two had mild cold-like symptoms (oxygen saturation 96>) and the other three were practically asymptomatic or completely asymptomatic. No loss of taste or smell for anyone.

DS just had it - he's 22 months. Only symptoms were low grade fever, runny nose, slight cough, watery eyes for one day. He was 100% normal the next day.
His Binax came back positive almost immediately. In symptomatic cases, it's extremely accurate so good news for your family!
We did not bother taking any precautions. By that point, we had all been exposed anyways and he's little. We are both vaccinated - DH got it (extremely mild) and I did not.
DS had it shortly after Christmas and for him it was laboured breathing the first night with a fever, by the morning the fever was gone but he was lethargic and had some congestion + a cough the next day.
DS had COVID. He was 10. Headache, fever for a few days. He says he doesn't smell as well as he used to but I'm not sure how real that is. DD was 8 when she got it. Headache and fever plus she threw up (which DH did also when he had it). She doesn't have any lingering symptoms.
My 7 year old had covid over Christmas. Fever, lack of appetite, lethargic. Rapid came back negative, then he took a nap on my chest and breathed directly up my nose for an hour. Then we got news that the test that takes longer was positive. Hard to believe, but I never got covid even despite that nap. I took antibody tests and have always been negative before getting vaccinated in April. We did wear N95s and my son did wear a mask in the house.
DD(8) had it the last week of July into the first week of August. First/only symptom appeared on a Sunday and it was a headache and she was a little lethargic for half the day. We got the email from her day camp about her being exposed the previous week on Monday evening. The headache stayed until Tuesday. She officially tested positive on Wednesday, and by that time she was no longer having any symptoms. DD carried a Lysol can around the house and spayed every space/surface she encountered and we wore masks around each other when talking or playing close to each other. My H and I are both vaccinated and we both never got it. H and I tested twice during the time frame just to make sure.

My kids never had a fever. They slept a little more than usual, coughed a little, sore throat and complained of a headache/were whiny. In the grand scheme, I didn’t think it was much more than a small cold or whiny because they stayed up too late the night before. I would have never known there was covid in the house except for the positive tests. My 6 year old has had lingering headaches for a few weeks, nothing that slows him down much.

He got sick on Sunday and sent him back Wednesday. By that time he was fever free for over 48 hours and just had a lingering cough. They were fine and accepted him back. Now older DS has it but just the runny nose. Luckily camp is over and school hasn’t started so we are just laying low this week.
This thread is helpful, thank you. I sent my DS to daycare today per usual and got a call at 12pm that he had thrown up, but she suspected it was maybe from congestion because she said he sounded stuffy. Brought him home, and he's been on the couch all afternoon. Had a fever of 100.7 this afternoon and has perked up with Motrin. He did complain about his legs hurting briefly but claims they don't anymore. Sounds a little congested but nose is not running. Occasional coughing. We have a telehealth appointment tomorrow morning and then he can get drive through tested (this is after I pushed for it, because even going on 1.5 years of this bullshit, doctors around here are still hesitant to test people). They weren't going to do it since he wasn't exposed. Eyeroll. #centralPA
Anyway, I guess we will find out tomorrow I'm nervous.

Our test just came back negative! Your sons symptoms sound super similar so FX for you guys.
So I log into the UPMC system this morning in anticipation of DS's appointment at 10:30 and it says its for TOMORROW, not today. I am 99.5% certain when I spoke with them yesterday that I said "tomorrow," which would have been today/Tuesday. Because I wanted the damn appointment YESTERDAY but they didn't have any. Jesus Christ.
DS also wakes up seeming completely fine - no fever, nothing hurts. I'd feel better for peace of mind to just get a test though. My brother is flying in from CA tomorrow and obviously we shouldn't see him if someone has Covid. I called back to see if I could get an appointment today, but I assume they're going to say they don't have any now. WWYD - cancel tomorrow's appt and just take him to urgent care for a test? I assume I also have to cancel 24 hours in advance or I'll get dinged for a no-show, so basically I need to cancel it within the next hour or so.
lo, I'm going to take him to UC shortly. I talked to the peds office, of course they had no appointments today now, and they said as long as I cancel tomorrow's appointment by 5 I am good, so I'll make sure we can get this done today first and then cancel it later on.
Guys, I am just unbelievably frustrated. I took DS to one of our urgent cares this morning and they refused to test him, saying he had to had to have had symptoms for 5 days for the rapid test to be accurate. Literally never heard this before, I just thought that rapid tests worked better when you were symptomatic. They literally would not let me in the door. Turned around and went to another urgent care, and they said they would rapid test him, and to come back at 2. Came back at 2, finally got in around 2:40, and they definitely tried to convince me that I did not need to test him and that I was being an overbearing mom basically. Wanted to test for strep first. I said fine, but I still want both tests. Strep was negative (I knew it would be). They came back in to do the Covid test, and informed me that it was going to be the PCR, not rapid, which is what I had asked for. Fine. I can wait another day I guess. DS is usually super compliant with medical things but they did the deep nasal swab and he was REALLY upset about it, multiple people tried to hold him down, and he tried to grab the swab from them. They said they think they got a good enough sample though.
If they are going to make it this difficult around here, I get why people just don't even bother. Meanwhile, he's acting completely fine today so now I'm questioning if I am actually insane making him do this. (I know I'm not).
Side note- I can't find any BinaxNow tests in pharmacies now or I would've done a rapid my own damn self. I have some coming from Walmart.com but it'll be a bit.

Ugh that sounds awful! I’m really sorry for both you and him. Both of my kids had PCRs, rapid antigen tests, and strep swabs today and I felt so sorry to subject them to all of that. I can’t imagine doing this every time they get a symptom, but I don’t see any other choice now that school is starting.
DS is negative. I had to call them of course, because why would anyone actually do what they say they're going to do. I also had to STOP BY the office for a printout with the results. It's 2021 people, this couldn't be emailed?
