DD had a headache last night and nasal congestion (she and DS2 have been home as close contacts this week) and so am scheduling a test and keeping DS1 home today too.
I live in a valley and we got hammered with the remnants of Ida. Luckily my house is okay, but several neighbors have not fared as well and have water in their basements despite having functioning sump pumps. Roads are closed everywhere because the local creeks and river are flooded. The creek closest to my house normally runs at only a few feet deep and is expected to crest around noon today at above 20ft. It's crazy. They even had to close our schools today.

Today is my Friday. My H took tomorrow off, too. My mom is our childcare provider and usually when either of us has the day off we’ll make sure to give her the day off, too.
Not tomorrow - we didn’t tell her and we’re still going to get dressed for work, do pickup/drop-off the same, etc., just to have a day to ourselves. We’re going to ride the local bike trail and be lazy 😂

I love jury duty too! Only done it once, but was selected for a murder trial, it was so interesting.
I'm so over my kids being sick, DD was for 4 days last week, not DS is on day 4, but not better yet. Its croup (not COVID, been tested), and hate seeing them so sick. Also, I just want a full night sleep.
The one time I got called for jury duty, I was excused because the court schedule did not work with DD's daycare schedule and DH and my mom were both out of town. I was so disappointed!
Speaking of DH being OOT, I was right, he's heading for LA to coordinate pumping operations. He was supposed to be home tomorrow morning from his current trip, but now he comes back tonight and has 36 hours home before he leaves Saturday. I'm thrilled that we get tomorrow to frantically do stuff around the house and get his gear packed, and that we get to use the fancy baseball tickets and hotel stay tomorrow night that I got him for his birthday. We don't usually get more than a few hours notice on stuff like this.

I’m home today; school closed because of flooding. We don’t have our virtual instruction stuff set up yet — thought we’d need that later on for the plague, not for the flood — so it’s a total day off for me.

sproctopus I highly doubt there’s a student in that class who will think you suck for finishing early! I used to take 6-9pm classes after my 8:30-5 work day and I was thrilled when they finished early.
I was thinking this morning that one silver lining of Covid is no longer having to go to this huge Labor Day party that H’s friends used to have. Every year DD was the youngest kid there and they’d have a bounce house that the older kids would just work to flip over and DD would freak out because she wanted to play on it and couldn’t because it was too rough in there. And no adult said boo. It’s one of those things that irrationally pisses me off every time I think about it. That and people would bring all kinds of food and there were never any serving utensils. Year after year I spooned pasta salad to my plate with a tiny plastic eating spoon. You think they’d maybe just buy a set of cheap ones to use for that??

Crap, most places have no testing slots till Saturday. Finally found a place that would test in the AM. They offer PCR and rapid. PCR with a 3 to 5 day turn around and it is a holiday weekend. Will most places do both tests? If not which do I get? We are testing newbies.

Last time I took DD for one (few weeks ago) the doctor said the rapid was very reliable and we did that only.
I need to call my new job and see when they are sending over my offer. There's also a lot of shit going on at my current job that I should not be handling if I'm leaving... And I want a full week of between jobs.
I just hope I can get a hold of my boss to resign. It is ridiculous how difficult he is too get into contact with sometimes.

Are you testing for symptoms or because of an exposure? Everything I've read says that the rapids are pretty accurate if you are testing for symptoms, but not as good if asymptomatic. If you are testing because of close contact, I'd try to do both or get the PCR and quarantine until the results. If they won't let you do both, you could also do the home rapid test while you wait for the PCR, which is only like $25 at CVS. BinaxNow is the one I've used.

DD2 is the youngest kid most get togethers and I *hate* it. H and I end up supervising all the kids while all the other parents hang out and chat because we have to keep an eye on her. I feel your pain. DD1 is old enough now that we let her run off mostly unsupervised.
I briefly thought about inviting people over for Labor Day, but the weather keeps changing and I don't want to do it inside. I'm having really mixed feelings about it, sad that we can't because our kids are still unvaxxed but happy to have a free weekend.

Check with the school; ours doesn’t accept rapid results to come back.

Exactly! And because it's H's friends that live on the Cape that he doesn't get to see often, he would be off socializing while I had DD stuck to me. Plus the wives of those friends are all close so I don't feel like I really have anyone to talk to there. The last time we went she was 4 and I told him he was welcome to go to the party next year, and bring her if he wanted but I wasn't attending. Covid took care of that! I wondered if they would try to have it this year but I haven't heard anything and I'm glad. She's a lot more independent now and would probably be fine but I'd rather do other things.

Both younger kids are home as close contact quarantines. DD has had headaches 2 days in a row and yesterday started nasal congestion.

I’m glad you don’t have to go! That sounds annoying all around.
I may have passive aggressively brought serving utensils as a “hostess gift” in a similar situation. I can’t imagine hosting and not bothering to own a big spoon lol It really is a pet peeve of mine.

Oh believe me, if I had to go again I'd have grabbed a handful of the plastic serving utensils from the catered lunches at my office! The party was so big and hectic no one would even have noticed me putting them out. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this peeve, and I've seen it at other gatherings. That and no ice drives me nuts - like oh I'm having a party, bring what you like to drink! I'm not a beer drinker and prefer cocktails over wine at some parties so I'll bring vodka. I'll go to make a drink and find empty ice cube trays in the freezer lol. H calls me ice insecure because I'll often pack a small cooler with ice for parties and I'm constantly fretting over our ice maker. "There's less ice than normal in here, did you use it for something?" "I don't think I've heard ice drop today, is the ice maker working?"
We got a little bit of water in the basement near our sump pump but I had preemptively put down a huge beach blanket and it is mostly contained. Our yard is partly underwater but everything else seems fine.
My dad is lost power which is rough for him because he is on a well and septic system. Hopefully it will come back soon. He said he saw the lightening and heard a big bang. His neighbors checked in on him though so that’s good.
My kid's bus did not pick them up at all. It went right by them. Like WTF.
WTF indeeed. We've had a number of bus struggles this year. The bus has yet to be close to on time for morning pick up - while I was working from home that wasn't a big deal but now that I'm back on campus except one day a week it causes me to be late as well. Thankfully my boss is very understanding.
We had a sub for a few days and when the time got so late that it promopted me to call the bus garage he SWORE he was there. Uhhh, nope you sure weren't. Said he would circle back around and then never did. I called again and they ended up sending another bus to get them after dropping off their route so the kids were really late. I get mistakes happen & maybe he went to the wrong stop but either he didn't circle back or he wasn't smart enough to radio the bus garage when he did and saw no kids and that ticked me off.
It's my DS' practice day of kinder today. (He goes with half his class for half of a day.) He is so nervous and scared! He's scared because the school has a therapy dog (he's terrified of dogs). He's in counseling and everyone at his school knows. It will be fine. I just really wish school could be a safe place for him in that regard. There's already covid and smoke/bad air quality to deal with.
I've been struggling hard with anxiety for a few years now. I have a previously set up appt with a counselor for Sept 7th. I had a breakdown Tuesday afternoon and I'm hanging on by a thread. Fuck COVID!

My BIL is in the hospital with covid. He's a trumper antivaxxer antimasker with a heart condition. It was when, not if. My unvaxxed sister is home quarantining their 4 kids (all under 12) solo while trying to get her & them all tested. Apparently it's complete news to her that testing sites have been super busy for the last month or so.
