My kid started his first job yesterday. He is working at a mechanic shop that is less than a mile from our house. He loves cars, so this was his dream first job. I'm really proud of him. He walked in there one day and asked the owner if he had any "employment opportunities." He told him not really, but leave his name and number and he would think if there was something he could help with. A week later, he hadn't heard from him, so he went back in and the owner told him that his phone number had been thrown away, so he was just waiting to see if he would come back and follow-up. He is only working 3 days/week after school for like 2 hours, but that is good, I think. Leaves time for other stuff and homework. Anyway, yesterday was his first day and he had a blast. He gave us a play by play of the whole time over dinner. It was awesome. But my heart does break a little bit with each "adult" thing that he does.
I don't have a good update on my pup. The vet today who knows her history said it's her kidneys. She's going to get more fluids and some different food, but it's not a guarantee. And I don't want to be selfish. If we can get her through the weekend just so we can have that time with her, I'll be happy. DH is absolutely gutted, so I'm trying to be the one asking the questions and seeing what's reality.
I used to watch Blue's Clues with my much younger brother and got a little choked up watching Steve's message this morning.
Today looks like it will be slow and I'm already not feeling very motivated. I expect the work day to feel 90 hours long so if someone could post something juicy, that would be great.
My son started at his new school yesterday. We have to get up an hour earlier, but he gets a bus and it stops right at our house. Woohoo! Wearing a uniform is a bit of an adjustment but I'm going to love it. I've always let him pick is own clothes but he has his own ideas about matching and doesn't seem to care if something has been torn by the dog. Plus he looks so handsome in his uniform! Yesterday was a half day and he's off today. We'll see if we're all exhausted next week after 5 days of early wakeups and lots of work! LOL
I just finished eating breakfast and it was so good. I love food so much, but loved it a little too much last year during the height of Covid, if you know what I mean LOL
We are dog sitting this week while my brother is on his honeymoon. His dog also happens to be the sibling of my dog, and it's crazy how much they look alike, except my dog is short hair and my dog-nephew is fluffy. The also act alike even though aside from a few playdates they haven't been around each other a lot in the last year. They even have the same bark which is really messing with my head.
georgeharrison, that sounds like a great first job and a good way to ease into it!
I just asked to work from home three days a week instead of two and my boss okayed it! Woohoo! That means I only come in Tuesday and Thursday. This works so much better for the schedule with my kids and their practices.
Also, what do you guys think of this? DD is 10 and dying to be a babysitter. She can take a course when she is 11, but for now she wanted to start out as a mother's helper. She wants me to 'advertise' her on our local FB page. I feel a little weird because she's so young and I obviously won't know all the people she will be helping. Would you feel comfortable with this?
calamity, I don't think I'd be OK with her going to a stranger's house yet. If there are families that you know with young kids, maybe send a text/facebook message just to them?
My DD is similar age (10 next month) and is a great mother's helper for my nephews, but I'm not sure that I'd let her go to an unfamiliar house.
I'm curious what others would do. I had a follow up appointment recently with a gyn surgeon to discuss my ovary. I see a regular gyn and had an appointment back in April where they did a PAP smear. The surgical gyn did an exam on me, and said "I just did a PAP since we hadn't done that yet". Except, if he had asked if I had had one this year, I would have told him that I did and that I didn't need another one. Since he had already done it, I didn't say anything. Now I got a bill for $129 since my insurance didn't cover a second one. Should I just pay it because it's my fault for not speaking up before they sent it off to the lab, or should I tell the office that they shouldn't charge me because they didn't ask before doing it? It's not a hardship to pay it, but it's an annoying waste of that money.
I had class last night and didn't get home until after 9:30pm. I went to bed shortly after 10. That is a LONG day. I liked the class but this is going to be a huge adjustment. I went back to school the semester that the pandemic started, so most of my classes so far were done online at home. I like being in class in person - I think the discussions were better quality than the online ones ever were - but it was so much easier on my life to attend when I was working and learning from home.
I swear things just wait to break until DH is OOT. Kids get sick, car tires pick up nails, main drain line backs up, a piece of gutter comes loose, stuff like that, and then today it's the freaking dishwasher leaking. I just turned it off, and I'll handwash everything for now and see if my dad can come help me pull it out and fix what I'm pretty sure is just a loose drain line this weekend.
jinkies, lust2hart, that's the problem- all of the families in our neighborhood and kids we know are older. Ideally she could help a mom get the kids off the bus and help out if someone works from home or something. She's so good with kids, but is still young herself.
wildrice, I'm surprised the surgical gyn didn't have you fill out a medical history form that would have asked for the date of your last PAP. I would at least ask the office about waiving the bill since he basically did the procedure without asking you or telling you in advance that they'd be doing it.
My boss' daughter just had their first walk in on the roommate (at college) with their s/o experience. We had a little too good of a laugh about if scrunchies or socks on the door are no longer a thing? My sophomore year my friends and I made up a joke about something from a show we watched as kids, saying we'd write that on our white boards. One night they did it to me as a joke, but I was off campus, so my poor roommate waited like 2 hours, then finally knocked like I'd had enough time lol. Oh to be back in college, hopefully not during a pandemic.
Finally, yes that Blues Clues video gave me a little tear. I was already babysitting, but we would play Blues Clues in the house. Thank you Steve

A small reminder that existence is a circle and what has happened will keep happening -
I found out a few weeks ago that a friend from jr. high/high school (not super-close, we didn't keep touch after I graduated, she was 2 years younger) lives a street over from me. She was with her daughter (2 years younger than mine) at the bus stop when I went with my daughter on the first day of school. We said hello, chuckled a bit, got the kids on the bus and went our separate ways.
Her kid and my kid are totally buddies now. They sit on the bus together every day to school. They sit together on the way home. They chitter chatter while waiting. It just makes me laugh to see their friendship starting. We must have compatible DNA we passed along or something.
Yesterday we did a little day trip to PA and went to a couple public markets/parks. It was great weather and we spent most of the day outside.
I had my hair up so it would be easier with mask wearing and the hair on the back of my head is pretty curly. I felt something fly into the back of my head. I’ve had flies do that before so I went to brush it away but realized it was stuck in my hair! I tried to pull my hair out of my ponytail to free it and it was really tangled so I ended up squishing it with my hand. Gross enough but then when I pulled it out it was in three pieces and a Yellowjacket!! Not a fly at all! I think the stinger grazed my scalp a little but I’m glad that it didn’t sting my hand or my head?? What a freak accident. I wasn’t even eating or drinking anything to attract them.
Our neighbor is like 13 (or maybe 12) and asked me about this a couple of weeks ago. I’d be comfortable letting her watch my kids on her own because of their ages and because her mom is right across the street if she needs someone. I’m considering giving her a shot on a weekend day so DH and I can go out for lunch or something.
Like others, I think I’d try to share it more internally or maybe on a neighborhood page, but not with the general public.
I'm annoyed with John Mulaney. I have no right to be. I don't even know him. But a cornerstone of his act for years was how great his wife was and in like 2 seconds he went from rehab to divorce to new relationship to pregnancy. His act...was an ACT! Lol.

Do any friends that you know have friends with smaller kids? I could be, in theory, ok with that. Especially if they are close friends.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham
I'm bored and I think I want to grow out my hair a bit. It's an asymmetrical cut right now (sort of a long pixie), so I hope I can deal with the the grow out phase. My stylist thinks the one side will catch up to the other by the holidays and then I would keep it in an inverted bob. She took up the longer side a little bit so it's not too lopsided while the shorter side catches up.
I made a delicious side dish to have with dinner from some tomatoes that I got at the farmers market. You take beefsteak tomatoes and slice them about 1/2" thick, place them on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, brush olive oil on the slices, sprinkle with garlic powder or minced garlic, add some chopped fresh basil, then top with grated parmesan and shredded mozzarella. Bake on 425 for 10 min until the cheese is bubbly and starting to get golden. It turned out SO GOOD!
calamity I would post it! But I've also been the person desperate for a mother's helper and only knew other people with toddlers and no one older. When I was looking for one I figured we would meet beforehand and their parents would be involved in the meeting, so you could get a feel for if your comfortable then.

Maybe it wasn’t?
His relapsing must have been a big change for their relationship/marriage. He had talked about getting sober before 2012 and they got married in 2014. I’m not sure if they were ever together when he was still using. That might have been a deal breaker for her/him even if they did have a great relationship prior.*
I hope for the kid’s sake he’s doing okay but the fast timeline does seem like a lot.
ETA: *I feel like she said she was surprised he filed for divorce and he didn’t discuss it with her? His behavior seems a little erratic.
Just got a pic of dd’s class from today- she is not wearing her mask. Ugh! And there are only like 3 kids with them, and two of them have them down on their necks.

I had a crazy ass day, y'all. Power went out at work 5 minutes post-start time, after a distribution transformer blew right outside our front windows (across the street, up on a utility pole). I happened to have the blinds open in my space, so I saw the whole thing. It looked like fireworks!
A colleague of mine submitted the nicest note about me to the county (we have this recognition thing we do). The recipient gets a copy...and in 28 years of doing this job, I've never had someone so publicly recognize my work. I've been struggling lately w/ self-doubt and little-to-no self-worth, so it feels a little like divine intervention (if you believe in that kind of thing); the person who wrote it will never know exactly how much her kind words were needed and appreciated at exactly this moment.
I took Nico to his first well visit, though I knew something was going on with one ear. He has an ear infection but there is also a mass in his ear that is most likely causing the infection. I go back in two weeks to see if the meds clear up the infection and to see if they can get a better look at the mass. After that he will have a procedure to either remove or get a sample of the mass. The vet seemed to think it is less likely a polyp and more likely cancer. We asked my SIL, who is a vet who only treats cats, and she said given his age she would guess it is a polyp even without the other common symptoms of a polyp in the ear.
Sorry, that was a lot. I just... I really hope it is something that is relatively harmless and easy to remedy.

I had a dentist appointment this morning so I treated myself to Dunkin Donuts before going to work. Those darn strawberry sprinkle donuts are just so good.
