Do your kids or students use planners? Or some kind of calendar? My son is in 5th and started in a new school. He hasn't had any homework in 2 years and will be getting homework every night. He's also gotten an assignment that's due next week that he plans to work on a little each day. That hasn't happened in the past. His old school gave the kids planners every year but they never used them. He tends to think he'll just remember what he's supposed to do, but with multiple teachers and subjects that is not going to happen.
He said one of his notebooks is a homework notebook that his homeroom teacher will have him write things down in,but I haven't seen that come home. It's only the first week, but I want him to develop a routine and be responsible for knowing his assignments. I'll help him learn to organize and track, but I'm not texting and posting about homework he didn't bring home! If anyone could share what works I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
DD is in 5th grade and the school has provided them with planners. They don't get homework (unless they didn't finish something in class) but they do get projects and are expected to study for tests. They write everything down in the planner--due dates, upcoming projects, school events, etc. The planner comes home every day. This didn't start until the 2nd full week of school though.
Part of 5th grade here is learning strategies for doing well in junior high when you have 7 teachers and the planner is part of it.
My kids are in 1st and 3rd, planners start in 1st at our school. Teachers are very involved though, writing the assignments on the board and checking to make sure students are writing it all down. Last year homework was posted on Google Classroom, which was great because my oldest wrote things down wrong all the time.
I am guessing in 5th they have a more hands off approach, so I would keep reminding him before and after school. It will start to kick in eventually, if only to stop hearing you ask the same question
Thank you both! I know a couple of other parents at the school, I will ask them how it's been handled. If they've been gradually working on this the other kids might already be in a place where they're ready to be responsible for it, and my son is definitely not there. LOL Is there a planner anyone would recommend if the school doesn't provide?
