We just replaced the carpet in bedrooms and playroom and are so happy. Hardwood is definitely in right now (and we have it in the other main living areas), but I am curious what people prefer.

I like carpet in bedrooms but with cats who have tried to dig under every bedroom door we have, I’m going with all hardwood in the new house we are building!
Our last house had carpet in the living, dining, and family rooms, stairs, upstairs hall, and bedrooms. We moved this summer and put hardwood floors in. The only place we still have carpet is the stairs, and that's only because we didn't get to them before we moved in.
I definitely don't like carpet in the DR. I'm super tired of dropped food on wall to wall carpet. I'm planning to get a Ruggable rug for the DR to go over the hardwoods here.
Right now I miss carpet a little bit in the family room, because the HWs are kind of loud, echo-y, and not cozy. I am pretty sure an area rug will help a ton, but I haven't gotten any further on that than pinning a bunch of maybes.
The bedrooms, I'm not sure yet either. Reserving judgment until I get area rugs as planned. Obviously we chose HWs, but I haven't lived with them long enough to know whether that was the right call.
I think we're going to replace the carpet on the stairs with more carpet. Right now I don't have the capacity to deal with all the decisions associated with doing beautiful HW stairs, redoing the banisters, newel posts, etc. Plus I think my dog might struggle with HW stairs, even if my kids don't.
We have it upstairs in bedrooms/hallway (bathrooms are tile) and downstairs in the office. Otherwise we have lvp in the kitchen/dining/living/sunroom. I prefer no carpet anywhere.
We have hardwoods on our main and upper with the exception of blue slate tile in the sunroom (which is back entry / mudroom) and bathrooms. We have carpet in our basement, which I prefer down there — it makes the space cozier and softer for play than having LVP or something on a concrete slab.

I picked stairs only, but I don't mind it in the bedrooms or even the living room. If there isn't wall to wall, then I like a LARGE area rug. But I think it's easier to replace an area rug when it gets worn out than to clean or replace wall to wall carpeting.
We have carpet in our guest rooms, main floor office and upstairs office. I only wanted carpet in rooms where we can close the door (pets). In our master we decided no carpet since our dog sleeps with us.
Except for bathrooms, we originally had hardwoods planned throughout this house, which we built. But we changed our minds and decided to do wall-to-wall carpet in the bedrooms like we've had in most places we've lived. We prefer the warmth of carpet in the bedrooms and area rugs just weren't the same to us. Bonus, because it was technically a downgrade, we were able to get much plusher carpet than the builder basic. Haven't regretted it yet.

We are planning new flooring now and are almost positive we will end up sticking with carpet on the stairs and throughout the upstairs where all of the bedrooms are (excluding bathrooms). We will replace first floor flooring with LVP (it’s a mix of really beat-up HW which we hate anyway and carpet) and considered it upstairs too but I just find carpet in the bedrooms to be the coziest option, which is the feeling I want in our bedrooms. I also don’t want to deal with picking out the perfect area rugs. We could have gone with LVP in the upstairs hallway and stairs but I’m clumsy and feel like I’d slip on the stairs so much.
Right now I miss carpet a little bit in the family room, because the HWs are kind of loud, echo-y, and not.
Our house would have zero privacy without the carpet. The bedrooms are all next to each other. I don’t think an area rug would solve for that amount of echo/sound.

I grew up with carpet everywhere except bathrooms/kitchen and it just feels soft and cozy. We sat on the floor a lot as kids, either with friends or just family time when we didn’t all fit on the couch. To me, area rugs are decor, not for comfort (this is my own bias of course). Mostly carpet would be my ideal preference, but with pets and kids it really doesn’t make sense cleaning wise. My current carpet is disgusting and destroyed (it has been 13 years). Our next house will be hardwood throughout and I’m still kinda adjusting to that idea.
I personally prefer all hardwoods. Our basement currently has carpet and my dream would be to replace that with heated flooring and be done with wall to wall carpet forever.
We have all hardwood. I’d like some carpets but with dogs and kids it just wouldn’t be practical. Hardwood is so much easier to clean. We had carpet in our old home and it was so nasty with dog and kid accidents.

That’s why we waited to replace it for a while and got a really good wet vac. Now that the kids are 4 and the one remaining dog has very few accidents, it felt safer. I am sure though as he ages a bit it won’t be pretty.
We currently only have carpet in the bedrooms, stairs & bonus room. Area rugs are in the playroom, living room and entry way. Hardwood is everywhere else. We're extremely thankful that there's no carpet in our dining area. That was very messy with DS in our TH his first 4 years of life. The carpet was disgusting even though we had it professionally cleaned yearly.

I love hardwood and would have it everywhere with rugs, but my H hates hardwoods except in the living room and kitchen. We currently have my preference in two of our bedrooms but I think my H is going to win on this as he spends time in one of the bedrooms (as his office). I would love to remove the carpet on the stairs as it's a PAIN to clean but with an elderly woman and dogs, it's better to have some carpet for grip. I might be able to convince him to just do a runner instead of full carpeting, but we'll see (we need to replace the carpet soon).

In different houses we've had every possible combo of hard floors and carpet.
We prefer no carpet anywhere but are fine with it in bedrooms and the family room. But if the carpet needed to be replaced I'd replace with hard floors.

I prefer hardwood everywhere except the bathrooms. Any time we’ve lived somewhere with wall to wall carpet our allergies are noticeably worse, even with frequent vacuuming. I also prefer the look of hardwood, but it’s also just an air quality thing for me. Carpets trap too many allergens for us.
We have it in our bedrooms/hallway and both sets of stairs. Our walkout basement is also carpeted. I am thinking we'll eventually replace that with laminate wood but we'll probably keep the stairs, hallway, and bedrooms on our top level carpeted. I like how wood looks but I prefer the feel of carpet in bedrooms. I also think it helps prevent slips on stairs.

We only have hardwoods and area rugs, and I like that. We only have two real area rugs with significant pile, the other one is a mostly-nylon indoor/outdoor rug and then we have a bunch of ruggables for the smaller rugs. I like being able to wash almost everything.

We have carpet in out master bedroom and the upstairs hallway. Plus the basement. Everything else is hard surface.
We just replaced our carpet. I thought about moving to hardwood, but worried it would make the house too echo-y since the hall is a catwalk and open to below.

We only have carpet in our basement - finished great room, hallway, stairs, guest bedroom. main floor is wood/tile combo. I like carpet in bedrooms - but find it easier to clean hardwoods under the beds. We have rugs in all the main floor rooms.
In our mtn house we have carpet in every room except bathrooms (even one of the bathrooms and the laundry room - GROSS - that I just replaced with tile). we're taking out the carpet and replacing with LVP in the entry ways, mud room, laundry room, dining room. DH likes carpet in that living room - so we'll keep it there and in the hall to the bedrooms and bedrooms.
We were in a carpeted apartment for 11 years and I could not WAIT to be rid of carpet (primarily due to the cats). Now our house has carpet only on the stairs and hardwood everywhere else. We have gotten some area rugs but I wish we had more floors covered. I hate walking barefoot on hardwood.
I don’t like carpet. We only have it currently in one basement room (The exercise room- I hate it lol) and a runner on the stairs/upstairs hallway. I personally prefer the look of hardwoods, we have allergies so it’s easier to keep hardwoods clean, and it’s a lot easier and less expensive to update a room by replacing an area rug than by replacing carpet.

I picked bedrooms only but we also have it on the stairs and upstairs landing. I definitely don't want carpet in the dining area or family/living room. Our whole downstairs is hardwood.
I've been wondering about this as well. Our old house was all hardwoods and tile. This one is carpeted bedrooms, the rest is hardwood and tile. We need to replace flooring in all the bedrooms, but I'm at a loss about how to proceed.
I don't mind carpet, but we can't have it b/c one of my dogs will pee on anything that's soft and comfortable. We ripped it out of the bedrooms in our old house and put down LVP throughout the entire house and loved it. We moved into a house that is all hardwood (tile in bathrooms) and I'm fine with it. We didn't notice a noise difference when going from carpet to LVP in the old house, but it did have cork as an underlay. Flooring likely wouldn't matter here b/c our main floor is all exposed ductwork so we hear EVERYTHING upstairs.

We have it on the stairs and upstairs (hallway, loft, 3 bedrooms). We just replaced it and I'm totally fine with carpet upstairs. We also have carpet in our living room area (hard surfaces everywhere else downstairs). I would prefer to not have carpet there and extend the hard surface flooring... but that probably isn't going to happen. Husband and dog are always playing in there and it's practical to have carpet there. Aesthetically it isn't my preference.
