What do you keep in a safe? We are finally getting our act together and purchasing a small safe to store passports and birth certificates. What else should be kept in here? I started thinking about copies of insurance polices but most of that stuff is online. Our photos are backed up online as well. Maybe my wedding rings since I rarely wear them.
Thanks for any ideas about what else should be secured in a safe.
In ours we keep birth certificates, social security cards, extra checkbooks, copies of our estate documents (will, POA, health care directive), marriage license certificate, house deed, life insurance policies, CDs of our wedding photos, savings bonds, titles to our vehicles, my horses' registration papers, and the boys lifetime hunting licenses.
In addition to all above Trissie said, we also keep a back up of all our Pc harddrives in the safe on an external drive with all pics etc... Also some jewelry not worn often
We also have debit cards to an account we don't spend money from. I don't really care if they burned because I could replace them if I needed to, but I figure if they are in the safe they are less likely to get lost.
High school class rings Old photos Wedding invite/program Car titles
I think it’s really nice that you have some wedding stuff in there. Now I will probably do the same and I now realize we don’t have a copy of our license…

I keep my external hard drive at another house. I have two, one here, and I periodically back up new things to one, and trade them out. The biggest risk being fire and water, so it is unlikely that both houses would burn down or flood at the same time. I keep passports, birth certificates, deeds, marriage certificates, and our will. I keep the key in it, since it is portable, and and I don't want someone to steal it, thinking it has value. I hide it among a lot of junk. My grandparents had a big safe, with a lot of valuable and easily pawnable items. Thieves stole the whole thing. I just want to keep some papers safe from water and fire.
We keep important documents (birth certificate, passport, SS card, etc — each family member has their own clear plastic folder for their documents), extra checks, some jewelry, car titles, extra keys to our vehicles, stuff like that.
