My friend’s daughter is being treated at CHOP and she would love some new restaurant recs. They love to go to reading market. They would love to know if there any secret best cheesesteak spots that aren’t pat’s or geno’s. Her daughter is a teenager so it doesn’t have to be super kid friendly, but not too expensive. Thank you
My favorite cheesesteak place is Jim’s on South Street.
There’s a good Mexican place by CHOP called Distrito. There’s a hole in the wall Thai place called My Thai on 22nd and South that I love. Amada is really good. I also really like Dizengoff.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I feel like Tequila's, Mixto, Pod, and Amada could get pricy fast- not sure what your idea of "not too expensive" is. If she's traveling and paying for lodging and medical stuff these might be a splurge.
Jones is kind of fun for it's mid-century vibe and comfort food. Sabrina's is good for breakfast and lunch- there's one in University City but nearer Drexel. A South Philadelphia Italian dinner like Ralph's might be fun. Hip City Veg is good even if your don't normally eat a vegetarian diet.
Ah, I missed the “not too expensive” part. My bad.
Sabrina’s is a good rec! There is a mexican place over by the Art Museum called “La Calaca Feliz,” which is yummy and has lots of outdoor dining space. Also over there is Bishop’s Collar (outdoor eating with pumpkin decorating), Jack’s Firehouse and Fare.
There used to be a Thai place at 39th and Chestnut called Pattaya. Not sure if it’s still there!
Last rec would be Umai Umai by the Art Museum for sushi.
We like Monk’s - we always get the steamed mussels, and they have burgers and sandwiches and salads and stuff. Plus a really good craft beer selection. It’s a Belgian-style pub but we bring our 4YO (she loves the mussels) and I always see families there. I’ve also eaten at 2nd Story Brewing for work and I’d take my kid there.
John’s Roast Pork has good sandwiches. I like breakfast/brunch at Sabrina’s.
I haven’t been to all of Michael Solomonov‘s restaurants but I assume they’re all really good (haven’t tried Abe Fisher, Goldie, K’Far). We’ve gotten the fried chicken and the donuts from Federal Donuts, and the takeout hummus from Dizengoff is outstanding - those are if they want to take something back to the room. Zahav is my favorite restaurant anywhere but it’s very hard to get reservations. And it’ll likely be $100-150 for a meal, which is obviously too expensive for a normal-day bite, but if they want something special IMO the price is a steal for what you get.
I'm not from Philly but 7 or 8 years ago we ate at Parc which is a French bistro and it was really good (I had the mussels), and I don't recall it being too too expensive. We also ate at Buddakan and it was delicious.
Dalesandros for cheesesteaks. I have no idea about proximity to CHOP, it’s up by temple. dalessandros.com/
Dalessandros is not near CHOP and also not near Temple. 🤔 It’s in NW Philadelphia.
Hmmm. Ok. My friend that went to Temple med school implied it was near there 🤷♀️. My only knowledge of Philly is biannual trips to Conshohocken. But I know it’s a good cheesesteak 😁
edit, friend also lived in conshohocken during med school, so, I assume it was all in the general vicinity.

Ha makes sense. I mean geographically Phila is not a sprawling city.
So it’s prob 7 or 8 miles from temple to delassandros, and then maybe 7 miles from delassandros to conshohocken. From chop it’s probably 8 miles maybe to delassandros.
So it’s not like they are crazy miles away, just in a dense area I wouldn’t call those “close”. You would pass a billionty restaurants on your way and I assume they’re aiming for quick since they are there for medical reasons.
Phila is made up of probably 50ish neighborhoods. So if I’m calling something close I would prob be talking about same neighborhood or adjacent neighborhood.
Just difference in perspective. Mileage wise they are certainly not far away.
af1212, that makes total sense. It could also be I was reading far more into a conversation, that went something like “I’m having Dalssandros tonight” “yum, I loved that place in med school.” Followed by a similar length conversation about consohocken. 😂 I’ve been going up there for a week twice a year for, basically, 20 years. And yet, I think Dalessandros is the most exploration I’ve done. LAME!
