Skinny is out, right? We adopted a 10 year old girl, and we’re supposed to get her an outfit. She wears a women’s size large, so I’m thinking size 12 jeans? Maybe 11 in juniors? Anyone want to help me shop?
You adopted a 10 year old?!? WOW!!! Seems like you buried the lede here!
Congrats!
OMG. I just realized you probably mean like "adopt a kid" for the holidays. Whoops. Anyway...
I'm no help. Girls here are still wearing skinny jeans to school, but I do see the "cool" high school cousins wearing these horrid crazy retro acid-washed wide-leg jeans. Also ripped.
Honestly most middle school girls I see are wearing leggings or yoga pants with tennis shoes. Crop tops are in so I’m either seeing cropped hoodies or a cropped tee with an oversized sweater over it. Or an oversized sweatshirt.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I…think she means for the holidays.
Unless you are joking, in which case I’m an idiot lol.
A Women’s large is usually a 12-14. I agree that jeans are tricky without knowing the exact right size. Most elementary-aged kids we know wear leggings or joggers.

I’d probably try to go a jegging route if you’re not sure of exact size. Jeans are hard to fit when your body is there, let alone just going by the general “size L women’s”.
Either that or I’d try to get a pair of straight legs/boot cut with stretch. I don’t think I’d go full wide-leg or flare. People keep saying they’re back, but I never see anyone out in the wild with them on.
I have 10 and 12 year old DDs. They do wear jeans, but even going shopping and trying them on is hard to find ones they like. I would definitely not do jeans. High waisted black exercise pants are what everyone is wearing and likely would fit better. My kids probably wear jeans 1-2 days of the school week and leggings every other day.

My 10 year old will only wear jeans if I absolutely make her, and even then it's stretchy ones. I would also do athletic pants (my 10 year old wears regular leggings a lot, but prefers the athletic leggings. I'd probably get a matching outfit of leggings and top from Old Navy or something, both in women's large.
This may be weird, but I wish the angel trees and 'adopt a family' holiday things would include a picture of the kid. You could get an idea of what they wear and gauge size. One year I had a 3 year old and the size requested was child medium (as in 7/8). And I get that kids are all different sizes and sometimes parents want to size up so things last, but I feel like I'd have a much easier time picking stuff that would actually work and be useful if I could see who I was buying for. I know my kids are small for their age, but my 10 year old dd is currently a child M in most things, sometimes a L, and I'm a women's L in leggings, and I have a hard time wrapping my head around women's L leggings being the best fit for any 10 year old, but if that's the size they put, that's what you go on.
If she wears a women's large I wouldn't get something in junior sizing, most likely size 12-14 as PPs said. I feel like every style is in right now so get something you think is cute and include the gift receipt. Based on what I see in DD's friend group I'd go with a 90s grunge look, ripped jeans, flannel shirt, cropped top and of course very soft socks.

My daughter is only 3, but my son is 13 and unless she specifically said jeans I'd get some sort of legging or yoga pants. Could be #regional but pretty much no kids at my son's middle school are wearing jeans, it's all leggings, athletic pants, etc.
as an edit - maybe say you're "sponsoring" a 10yr old for the holidays
But - it's a crap-shoot with jeans/bottoms from what I see. anything from 90s grunge type baggy - to bell bottoms - to ripped jeans - to skinny. it's SO hard.
an 11 in Juniors does not equate to a women's large from what I've seen... I would say women's size 12/14 for Large.
When we sponsor kids I always include the receipts as well as a small gift card. Is there anything else that is on the list you can get her? otherwise - I agree with joggers and receipt
