I am finally starting to get around to area rugs, and DS's room is on my list. His room is L-shaped, and I'm struggling a little. The most urgent need is for it to go under the ottoman, so it doesn't scratch up the floor.
Would you do round? square? rectangle (running window to closet)? rectangle (running chair to crib)?
ETA new/better pics now that it’s the weekend and I’m home in daylight:
The nook where we put the crib, is about 6' across. I've been considering a 5 or 6' square or circle, or 5x7 rectangle, to put under the ottoman/chair area.
Most of the rugs I'm looking at are yellow/white. It will go with the curtains/art, and it seems to be DS's favorite color.
I would go round. If you go rectangle (5x7) you could place it at an angle.
ETA: here’s a pic of the rug we have in DS2’s room. I want it under my feet when I’m in the chair, so the angle worked best. Plus, gives me a longer quiet runway to the door to escape MOTN.
Also, before this rug we had a smaller Pillowfort rug from Target that was a braided rug that was oval... the rounded corners would kind be in between and soften the corners of the room, like PP mentioned.
My first though when reading the OP was round, and then I saw so many others suggested it. And I like artichokie’s reasoning. I think that was what was in my head without knowing it.
I like round but my only concern is going big enough. I like rugs to cover much of a bedroom floor for comfort - esp in cold climates. Also, a good portion of the circle may be blocked by a larger bed one day, will you like that look?
simpsongal , I have been trying to figure out what I'll do when DS moves from the crib to a bed. Since he's already 2.5, that's on the near term horizon. With DD, she moved straight from crib to double bed at 3, because the crib was passing down to DS. With DS, I think we'll probably do a toddler bed for a while, but that's a short term solution. Even when we move to a bed, IDK whether we'd do twin or full. With his room shape I think we need to be really thoughtful about furniture. IDK yet whether we'll put the dresser in the nook (where the crib is), or later a desk, or the headboard of the bed. With so many variables, I was thinking I'd buy an inexpensive rug now, and either it'll work longer term or it won't, and as long as I buy at a price point that I'm comfortable offering up on Buy Nothing, it doesn't need to work long term.
I'm totally struggling to decide though!
DD's room was much easier. I bought her this Ruggable:

Susie, I LOVE that rainbow rug and that will age very well!
That's a tough one re the room orientation - I think buying a round rug now and knowing you're not boxing yourself in for future furniture arrangements is a good perspective. Sometimes I'm thinking too many steps in advance and it keeps me from committing to something (see e.g., my entire first floor)
