Hi folks - I want to make sure I'm thinking this all the way through and not missing anything.
I received a notice from my state that my 2020 tax return was being updated due to unemployment compensation that I did not declare. According to them, I now owe about $1,000.
Of course, like so many others have experienced in the last two years, this is fraud. I've been employed the whole time and I didn't receive unemployment, someone filed under my SSN. So, help me think through that I'm doing all I can:
I have registered a fraud notification with the state Dept. of Labor. When they clear the UE claim, I can submit that clearance to the Dept. of Taxation. (These steps are following instructions on my state's web site.)
I have put a freeze on my credit with all three bureaus.
I have requested reports from all three credit bureaus.
I have checked my credit score and it has not changed, nor did I have any issues with refinancing my mortgage this summer.
I've alerted my company's accounting team.
Can any of you think of anything else I should be doing?
I work in HR and last year we had over 20 employees who had this happen to them. You’ve taken all the right steps but we also reported it as fraud from the employer side. Can you check with your job to see if they did that?

Yes, file a police report. You can look it up online or call the non-emergency line to ask how. When I had to do it, I just had to walk into my local precinct, fill out a paper form and turn it in.
This happened to a friend of mine. I got UE but recently logged into my debit account and it had a bunch of fraudulent $5 google play charges the bank was already investigating. I usually transfer all money out of the UE account but there was a couple hundred I left in there. For others, I highly recommend moving all UE money to your own private bank account.
