Personally I prefer 2" blinds. I like that I can control the amount of light we get and be able to see out while also still having some privacy while they're open. But then, I have a pet peeve about people being able to see straight into the house.
I do also pair them with drapes for a softer look.
I have never spent a lot on shades so maybe it’s because mine are poor quality but they seem fussy, a pain and easily get messed up. I have them in my younger two kids room so they will sleep later but everywhere else in the house we have blinds. In the kids room we pretty much always keep them down.

Not exactly what you asked but just to give you another option, we have jute Roman shades in most of our downstairs windows now and really love them. We are probably going to get them everywhere when we get our other windows replaced. They look great and are really easy to open and close. No valances.

We have inside mount roller shades and no valance in several bedrooms paired with curtains. Our windows are long. Something to be mindful of, despite ordering custom from blinds dot com, they were cut a littler narrower than I would prefer.

We have cellular shades, inside mount. Some rooms have window treatments but most do not. The ones on the first floor, street-facing were here when we bought the house. I bought ones for the bedrooms & baths that open top-down as well as bottom-up. They're just from Lowe's, nothing fancy, but I really like being able to leave the top 6" or so open to natural light while still having privacy on the lower part.
We have the blackout version in DS's room for naps, and light filtering everywhere else.

Not the greatest picture but we have roller shades with blackout curtains in all of the bedrooms. They do have the little valance. FH wanted it. In the main bedrooms we have added curtains to soften he look and hide the gap along the edge. In my office I leave it as-is. I like them well enough. They are not amazing but they are unlikely to break and they get the job done. We also spent $6000 on specialty cellular shades for our living and dining rooms so we were looking to cut costs here.
We have roller shades (with valance) everywhere but the bedrooms. I like them a lot, and they go better in our house which leans a bit more modern. our windows are also pretty big, so it helped that these weren't crazy expensive.

We have the jute Roman shades in our living room (they were here when we moved in) and although I love the look, I find them to be a pain to actually adjust. So we leave ours half up all the time. We don't have any other window treatments on our living room windows, but the ones in the back have the stupid half-circle decorative windows above them.
Our bedrooms have cordless cellular shades, and I like those much more and find them super easy to adjust (you literally just push them up or pull them down). We have curtains on all the windows in bedrooms too. I find that with curtains open and shades fully down, we still get plenty of light (but that being said, I like to keep rooms dim in general and don't go crazy for all the natural light like most people shown on housing shows do). I feel like curtains are needed for overnight to get things super dark though.

expectantsteelerfan Do you have ones that you pull down and then they retract up? If so and they are not retracting, you can look for the little dial-thing on the top and turn it a quarter turn or so counterclockwise. Usually that fixes it right up. If you don't know what I'm talking about I can try to find the manual. Assuming yours are the same as mine, that is. We've had ours for about three years now and they are very easy to adjust, but maybe the mechanism gets worse over time.
We have roller shades with a valance. It's fine. They do the job. We had no window coverings at all when we moved in (new construction house) and H cared deeply about what we got so we got roller shades with a valance. H found a locally owned window covering business and we went with them over a big box store.
All the bedrooms have blackout roller shades and blackout curtains.
