I'd like to put a runner in our laundry/mud room, and I'm debating what kind to get. At our other exterior doors, we have LLBean water hog mats. They do a nice job of catching water/etc. and stand up to foot wiping. OTOH, they're not super easy to clean when they need it. In the summer they can be hosed off and hung on the deck railing to dry, but in winter the options aren't as good.
We just got a couple large Ruggable rugs, and it seems like that would be another viable solution for a runner. The runner would literally be right in front of the washer/dryer, and relatively small, so frequent washing would be easy. OTOH, it's not as rugged as the waterhog mats, and friends have said the runners can be a pain to vacuum because they tend to lift up.
This entrance faces the backyard and is primarily used to come in after playing in the backyard/snow, and when gardening/working in the yard (it's near the bathroom). Definitely a "mud" entrance. Right now there isn't anything there, but today as I was bringing the kids in from the snow I really wished there was.

I just posted about vinyl flats below...I will update when I get it! The one I ordered is from Carolina Creekhouse. I have a ruggable runner there now, but I find myself layering smaller area rugs over it when the weather is bad so I can more easily toss them in the washer, and that kind of defeats the purpose. I do have a high-absorbancy mat right in front of the doggie door.
I love our ruggable runner. It’s in my kitchen but this is also my back door entrance (most used entrance) and the one I make my kids come in when they have wet or muddy shoes. We don’t have room for an indoor doormat and the runner so they go straight to the runner with all of the mess.
I vacuum it daily with no issues. I wash it often and it’s super easy to wash and dry and put back on.
ETA - if we are coming in from snow play (not just like out for a walk in the snow but playing with all of the gear) I lay towels down over the whole thing just for a little extra water absorption plus easier to pick up the chunks of snow that way.
We have a couple runners from Costco for this purpose. We’re not in the north, so I doubt they take as much snow/mud wear and tear. But they’re like 10 bucks and have a nonslip mat built in on the back. And we can toss them in the washer no problem.
We have a ruggable runner. I don’t think it’s hard to vacuum. I love that it’s washable. We’ve had it for a year so this is the 2nd winter and no complaints about how it handles dirty snow boots, etc.
LLBean has a new washable water hog mat, so I ended up ordering that as a hopefully best of both worlds option. It says commercial washer, but I bought the smaller size, and figure I can try it at home. It’s not as pretty as a Ruggable, but it’s a mud room. NBD.
