I just finished A History of Wild Places. It was ok. Interesting story, and I liked how it ended, but it seemed a little disjointed and unbelievable (I mean, the things that were supposed to be more believable).
Currently reading The Maid.
QOTW: I prefer quiet, but I'm not too picky. I usually read in bed at night so the only sound is the fan. Sometimes I'll read in the living room while H is watching TV or playing a video game. I don't turn on music to read usually.
I’m about to start Light Years from Home by Mike Chen. Still working on Doctor Zhivago (ok, the book is nearby but I rarely pick it up) — hoping to finish by book club. I should probably read some summaries so I know more of where it’s going.
QOTW: I need quiet. As a kid I could tune out anything and read, but I can’t now.
I finished Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff. Perhaps needless to say, I've been struggling with my toddler lately so I was looking for helpful pointers. Even without needing or wanting pointers, it offered a lot of really interesting insight into how ancient cultures parent.
I'm about to get into Chemistry by Weike Wang.
I said this in the other thread but I just couldn't get into Doctor Zhivago. It's probably timing more than anything. I feel bad about it!
QOTW: I prefer reading in a quiet setting but I've definitely tuned out a kids' show or movie to read.
I finished The Plot. Another book that I’m not sure how I feel about. It was ok and I read it quickly but the writing bugged me for some reason. The plot, that was such a sure thing, was really disappointing. The twist wasn't much of a twist. I probably would have quit but I wanted to make sure my assumptions were correct. Strong meh.
I started Doctor Zhivago but I couldn’t get into it. It’s so long and I currently have two other really long books I’m reading. I’m plugging away at the February book of the month and The Time Travelers Wife. Both are good so far.
QOTW: I like to read in silence but I have 3 kids so I’ve learned to tune out other noises and just read.

Finished Wintersong. It was disappointing. It started well, but kind of meandered and plodded along going nowhere. I could sense that a story was there, but it never really got to it in a compelling way.
Still reading The Murmur of Bees and started listening to Jane in Love.
QOTW: What background atmosphere do you prefer for reading? Quiet, music, conversation…? I prefer silence. I "hear" books while I read them, and it gets confusing with background noise.
Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today by Valerie Bertinelli (all about her disordered body image which is fine but not exactly what I expected?)
Taste Makers: Seven Immigrant Women Who Revolutionized Food in America by Mayukh Sen (this was so poorly written, very disappointing)
O Beautiful by Jung Yun (very good but ended abruptly)
Yinka, Where Is Your Huzband? by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn (I had a very different feeling about the main character than I think we were supposed to)
Fame-ish: My Life at the Edge of Stardom by Mary Lynn Rajskub (one of the odder Hollywood memoirs I’ve read)
The Accomplice by Lisa Lutz (a lot of fun but a lot of similar type names—Owen, Margot, Sam, Noah and it was a little confusing at first)
QOTW:
I do almost all of my reading in bed while waiting to fall asleep but in the warm weather I read in my hammock. I rarely read during the day in the colder seasons. It’s quiet by default.
I've been reading Braiding Sweetgrass for what feels like all month, and it's both interesting, and tedious. My book club meets tomorrow to discuss it and there is zero chance I'll be finished. (But I've read enough it's non-fiction that it can't really be "spoiled" for me.)
QOTW: I prefer quiet, but I can tune out music or TV if necessary. I can tune out conversations too, provided people aren't trying to talk to me, but it's harder, and people tend to get annoyed because often they are trying to talk to me and it takes me a minute to pull myself out of the story, and I get annoyed because I just want to read.
I've been reading Sisters in Arms by Kaia Anderson. It's pretty good. I'm generally over World War II fiction, but this is at least a different perspective and a focus I haven't seen before.
QOTW: If I'm reading during the day, I prefer silence. At night I generally will have the TV down low as background noise. I have to make sure not to put on something that I might pay attention to.
