My husband had a major dental procedure; it looks like it should be covered by the high deductible insurance although I only know that from google. Our dental insurance only covers up to $1500, but this was over $20k for all the work he needed. We paid the dentist with a check directly. We have about $6,000 in an HSA. Can we reimburse ourselves for the amount paid to the dentist by writing a check from the HSA to our personal accounts? I assume emptying the majority of the account in a lump sum that is not equal to that of the cost of the procedure would be a redflag but if we keep the documentation we should be good right?
Talk to your HSA administrator. For my HSA, I can get reimbursed for health expenses after the fact. You probably need an itemized receipt from the dentist plus your cancelled check.
