I finished Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult. I haven’t read any of her books for quite a long time, and I think I liked this one. Page turner, interesting and thought provoking, but not memorable for me. Covid focused, but I was maybe ready for a little more depth on that subject.
Currently rereading The Kitchen God’s Wife by Amy Tan, which I read long ago and don’t remember much beyond that I liked it.
QOTW: I pretty much love all things sugar related. Doughnuts are my favorite — yeast-raised with the sugar dusting or anything cream-filled (definitely not custard filling, though).
I finished The Lincoln Highway earlier in the week. I really loved it but was unhappy with a particular character’s ending. Unfortunately, it left me feeling conflicted enough that I dropped my rating from 5 stars to 4.
I also read The Maid. It was enjoyable enough but I didn’t think it was anything special. 3-3.5 stars.
Yesterday I started The President and the Frog (hard copy) and The Love Story of Missy Carmichael (e-book).
QOTW: I’m an equal opportunity sweets person. I love a good chocolate chip cookie, German chocolate cake, banana pudding, etc. Last week I got a Mexican hot chocolate cupcake from a local bakery and it was amazing. They also make a really great pistachio one.
I have been reading A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers. It's a weird book but it's certainly keeping my attention.
QOTW: Here is the cake that inspired the question. "Our Saint Honoré is caramel dipped choux pastry cream puffs filled with vanilla pastry cream and topped with whipped cream on a puff pastry base." I already told MH I want this form my birthday in June.
I finished I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys, 5*. I started What Could Be Saved by Liese O'Halloran Schwarz.
Qotw: My taste buds have changed a lot in the last year since starting a low carb diet. I no longer crave sugary treats like I used to. I do like making a small keto cheesecake for holidays.
I finished Vanderbilt by Anderson Cooper. The beginning and end were good but some of the middle chapters seemed more like fillers. Overall, it was interesting but I’m not sure I recommend it.
QOTW: I love all sweets. Cookies, cakes, ice cream, candy, cheesecake. I’ll take it all.

I think I got to 34% in Vanderbilt and I just couldn't do it anymore! I wanted to like it so much. There were a lot of interesting factoids but so much dense, boring material to wade through to get there.
Not much at all this week! I can’t really get into anything.
One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle
Full by Julie Spiro
QOTW: I really like doughnuts for sweet things I don’t make myself. A bakery near here has really good chocolate icing. Raised only though, cake doughnuts are the worst and I don’t know why they are so popular lately.
I got like 4 pages into Vanderbilt and flipped further along and couldn’t do it. You all are made of strong stuff then me. So disappointing!
I had it on audiobook which is the only reason I finished. One whole chapter was about a sailing event- boring. I’m not sure why they used so many filler details while leaving out more interesting facts about his mother. Maybe he thought he story had been told enough. Not sure but it didn’t help this book at all.

I’m reading Go Tell The Bees I’m gone and listening to The Forest of Vanishing Stars and also Catching Fire. We started Catching Fire as a family back in August and didn’t finish it, so we started over this week. Vanishing stars is the same author and narrator as the Book Of Lost Names that I just finished a few weeks ago, whoops!
I haven’t met many sweets I don’t like (except those with fake sugar). My favorite generally is brownies with ice cream, but I also request cream puffs and tres leches cake for my birthday.
