Multiple people were shot Sunday at a church in Southern California, authorities said.
The shooting happened at an unnamed church on the 24000 block of El Toro Road in the city of Laguna Woods, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said on Twitter.
“We have detained one person and have recovered a weapon that may be involved,” the department said.
Paramedics were “treating and transporting multiple patients,” the Orange County Fire Authority tweeted.

I felt terrible when my response to the OC church shooting was, “That area is all rich white retired old people and very red. Maybe this will get people’s attention?” My DH was like, “I doubt it.” My grandparents lived in that OC neighborhood years ago before they passed.

per TPM One of the ten dead was a retired cop working as a security guard at the grocery store. He engaged the shooter and shot him. But it didn’t stop him because the shooter was wearing body armor.
--------
So a good guy with a gun didn't save the day and ended up dying too.
I've seen a lot of comments on FB saying that if more people had guns in the store, one could have taken him out with a head shot.
Yes, the old ladies buying strawberries would have been more accurate than an actual retired LEO.
Also, because I was wondering, the security guard was only 55. It wasn't some elderly Wal-Mart greeter.

Ugh, I hate when the right makes this argument. More civilians shooting during an active shooter situation is a HORRIBLE idea. Not only are civilians not trained and more likely to miss and hurt others, but it makes it hard to tell who the ACTUAL shooter is. And if white LEOs showed up and saw a black shopper with a gun….unfortunately I think we all know how that would turn out.

I was at the Mets game yesterday and the announcer called for a moment of silence for “the 10 individuals in Buffalo who tragically lost their lives.” It enraged me, no one lost anything! Their lives were taken and the perpetrator was conveniently left out of the conversation.
I felt terrible when my response to the OC church shooting was, “That area is all rich white retired old people and very red. Maybe this will get people’s attention?” My DH was like, “I doubt it.” My grandparents lived in that OC neighborhood years ago before they passed.
It was a Taiwanese church meeting.
But the area is rich and white. That’s what is getting attention locally. I’ve seen a lot of “How could this happen here? We aren’t LA!” People don’t read details. They read headlines. So for majority of people who see the headline, they will start commenting about the area and how it could happen in that kind of neighborhood. The fact that it was a Taiwanese church meeting will be lost on them.
So I have some experience with this now. Due to mental illness of a family member it was decided he shouldn’t buy weapons. We told local police, the hospital (psych ward), FBI and state police. Law enforcement would NOT do anything about putting him on the registry to not buy guns. Apparent if we want that to happen we have to file in probate court out of pocket expense for us and for a lawyer and then the person has to be served and explained their rights and given a lawyer. Then appear in front of a judge.
So yeah the system is set up that it’s super easy for crazy people to buy guns and super difficult to prevent them. Family member has no history that would show up in a background check.
We did not pursue it in court because family member is now in assisted living and no access to their money.
No wonder this country is Fucked because guns are a constitutional right (have more rights than women btw).
Also the onus is all on the individual’s family to prevent and while we had the resources to file for psych hold and conservatorship many families would not know how to do that or have the resources to pay for an attorney. And the state does nothing.
Not to mention if you think your family member might be the next one of these monsters, pissing them off that much is probably something you'd be--rightly--kind of afraid to do.
Yes he was extremely mad to the point that my sister would not go to his house. So we were unable then to help him move out (he had been evicted). So the police would have picked him up (I think) with the mental health hold.
He ended up falling and calling 911, but the EMTs had to take one knife off of him, and the hospital had to take 3 more off him. Luckily, for them, he's an old man with delusions and a broken hip. Still dangerous, but not nearly as dangerous as a younger guy who was unhurt, had the capacity to plan and implement plans. Relative spent 5 weeks in psych ward and is now stabilized, delusions are not as strong.
We don't have the language for "evil" in this country. So then it gets coached in terms of mental health or like pp said its a Republican talking point. In terms of the court I think it is more of a "crime", right? So then law enforcement generally speaking doesn't seem to care about preventing crimes just following up after they happen. Exception being things like terrorism after 911 in NYC. I know the police there were heavily involved in preventing terrorism, but generally speaking there is no, "oh this person is evil and likely to commit a crime, so to prevent that let's do X". That doesn't seem to exist because with lots of the shooters there are warning signs.
And like clockwork, MTG tweets out about the “severe mental health crisis in America.” But yet… same beliefs.
Among many other things, what grinds my gears about this post is that republicans regularly ridicule mental health supports (eg safe spaces) and stigmatize mental health issues (eg "snowflakes"). And vote to reduce health care access. WTFBBQ.

MTG can go fuck herself. All these GOP assholes coming out giving T&P, yet taking away basic human rights on the daily are SURELY not adding to the mental health crisis, right? (Obvious sarcasm).
The hypocrisy of this group of people knows no bounds and anyone who votes for them is just as guilty.

It wouldn’t have made a difference anyway. The guard exchanged fire but he was wearing tactical gear! More good guys with a gun is not the answer. Fewer guns is. (And obviously the racist targeting of POC is the biggest issue of all)
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
A 911 dispatcher is on leave pending investigation/termination over HANGING UP on a woman who called from the Tops store during the shooting, asking her why she was whispering. How many minutes could have been saved?

The Justice Department has filed multiple federal hate crimes charges against alleged Buffalo mass shooter.
Prosecutors in the Western District of New York charged the 18-year-old White man with 26 counts of hate crimes and firearms offenses, some of which carry the possibility of the death penalty.
According to the criminal complaint, "[His] motive for the mass shooting was to prevent Black people from replacing white people and eliminating the white race, and to inspire others to commit similar attacks."
