I have no advice, but I'm glad you are pursuing this. I think his response is worse than the original problem. I could give the benefit of the doubt that not everyone knows how horrible these centers are, but he is clearly misguided on several things and doesn't seem particularly interested in learning how to do better.
I'm so deep in RIOT RIOT RIOT mode that I'm getting full on adrenaline tingles and my heartrate is up like I'm about to get in real life fist fight.
ALSO can we just point out how weird it is to open that email with "i don't know you well"
Like, not sure what that's supposed to mean, but BITCH YOU'RE ABOUT TO.
It could be innocuous, but to me it very much reads as "if you were somebody I cared to listen to I'd already know your name"
I'm also getting incredible echos in that reply of faxing leafy greens to haiti. It's classic "I'm helping! this can't possibly do harm even if you tell me exactly how it's doing harm!!!!"
Personally, soliciting for any charity/private organization in public school should be off limits. Volunteering/donating on your own time is fine. If service hours are required, any org should be accepted.

But they've always done things like this, and nothing is ever allowed to change in this district. People were threatening to pull their kids from school because they canceled the Halloween parade over COVID concerns. I wish I was exaggerating.

Totally not the point, but the “$3500 in teacher dress down funds” also annoys me. Can we please not make teachers pay to wear jeans? We are already buying crayons and snacks and books and shoes for kids that need them and and and and

I read it as he knows EXACTLY what those centers are doing, and he is 150% for that. Burn. It. Down.
I don't know that I've ever seen a more unprofessional and messy email from a principal. He's not even pretending. I feel like you should maybe make it public?
Is this a public school? I don’t remember from your previous posts. If so, I’d probably contact my local chapter of ACLU to see if they have any advice.
I like this idea as well. I’d like to think they could help from a strategic perspective to help stop this once and for all vs it coming up again in a year or two.

I’m just seeing this now and principal’s response is… something.
“Since we agree on the need to help women in crisis, this nearby organization/the local food bank / etc collects items to serve those exact same needs but without the baggage of compelling religious attendance.”
This is the kind of thing that I would be bringing to the superintendent (but also the racist comment about ‘minorities’ since surely white children can be in need of holiday gifts) and the ACLU.
There are so many great organizations that they can support without baggage, and framing it in that way up the chain of command seems solution-oriented rather than making noise. (I know you’re not making noise, but you know what I mean).

She would not help at all. We're pretty sure she's a Trumplican.

Send it to her anyways, then CC responses up the media chain. At this point I wouldn't let it go.

Alllll of this.
If he’s so hell bent on helping single mothers and children, then he needs a list of organizations that actually, you know, help single mothers and children. Not prey on vulnerable women.

BURN IT DOWN.
I don't actually have a problem with students choosing their own places for community service hours. I got most of mine be singing in the church choir (which is of course bs). But my school never said which were recommended. This, and worse, the response, is something that needs escalation.
School requirement was 100 hours b/c that was the state rule for scholarship. Do you have something similar? Do they have other secular options?
I know I don't need to say it here, but fuck CPC!!!!

The school requires 40 hrs each year of high school (9th thru 12th). They have a Google Doc of pre-approved organizations, divided into "causes" (helping people with disabilities, animals, environment, etc.) and most are secular.
But all of the faith-based pre-approved organizations are Christian ones.

From the superintendent (I didn't email her, so I guess either the MS/HS principal forwarded my email, or someone on the school board did)
I am in receipt of the email you previously sent to Mr. Principal. Our solicitor has advised that the District complied with applicable law by permitting the distribution of Student Council’s flyer and allowing Student Council to collect supplies for [organization]. The District will review its policies and practices to determine whether any revisions are warranted. Please note that neither Mr. Principal, nor I, were aware of any previous issues raised regarding [organization] with Dr. Former Elementary Prinicpal. We will share the specific concerns raised regarding the organization with Student Council and staff responsible for overseeing Student Council.

1. No lawyer in this country calls him or herself a solicitor
2. Any lawyer that stayed marginally awake during the first amendment portion of Con Law would highly recommend not doing this. Even if it's their personal opinion it's probably ok.

You could FOIA the emails sent between Principal and Super, and Super and “Solicitor.”

A source (who may or may not have been allowed to share) says the school board is taking this very seriously. They requested a brief from the solicitor explaining the laws around religion and public schools, and are having discussions about creating policies around fundraising for outside organizations. I'll be asking for more information and updates at the next school board meeting.
