Biden should make gun control his legacy. The 2nd amendment diehards aren't going to vote for him anyway. Executive orders now. This shit needs to end now. Today.
There is blood of little children on these people's hands. Go out and protest. Show them they will be held accountable.
i
Abbott, Trump, Cruz and the NRA are all absolute pieces of shit - protesting will not change their minds, and they repeatedly make it more difficult for them and their kind to be voted out of office. We need federal intervention that the SC can uphold.

We can also canvas very hard for Beto, Collier, and anyone else running against Abbott and friends. The best way to make change in this state is vote them out. With all the voter laws and gerrymandering it won’t be easy but it can be done.

Yes, absolutely - sorry, I take that as a given in this forum. I do all of those things and everyone else should as well.
But, especially in moments like these, I hate the implied sentiment that Texans don’t care or aren’t trying by people who don’t live here.
Really, really awesome to be at work scrolling through facebook and see a breaking news CNN active shooter at Texas elementary school. My soul left my body.
My son is in 3rd grade and for a split second I thought, is this how I find out there's a shooter at my kid's school?
Of course that's the reality for these families today. Fourteen babies not coming home. Another teacher forced to die doing their job. Another community terrorized.

Oh fully agree. Also this isn't a Texas problem. It's an America problem.
Another Texan here. I don't know what y'all think we've been doing for the last decade since Sandy Hook. I'm with lemoncupcake on this. There are hundreds of thousands of Texans who do a lot to persuade our government to enact tighter and tougher gun laws. One of my good friends is now the executive director of Texas Gun Sense. We've been doing the work for a long fucking time.
You know, today I was at my daughter's elementary school helping out with an end of year party. We left the classroom to go outside and I went to close the classroom door. It wouldn't latch. I wasn't sure why until I looked and say a magnet strip covering the latch. On that magnet are instructions to always have your door locked and in the event of a shooter, everyone rush into the classroom, and last person in the room is to remove the magnet, close the door, and turn off the lights. I knew about these but I'd forgotten about them. This is fucking America, y'all.
Sandy Hook shattered me and I thought that we would finally have to do something about guns in this country.
Nope. It's just another day here. So fuck the NRA. Fuck Cruz and Trump and the GOP. And fuck Abbott.

I’m so sad and angry and I feel so helpless. I think it’s pretty clear at this point the GOP and the NRA do not value human beings in any capacity, unless they’re a clump of cells in a uterus. And they’ve gerrymandered everything and this will never change and fuck them so fucking hard.
It’s going to take SO much to fix this — common sense gun control, laws on safe storage, increased mental health resources, harsher penalties, better communication between law enforcement agencies, changes to how people are flagged for extra scrutiny before purchasing weapons, and those are just the things I can think of, there are probably many more facets that I’m not thinking of. It’s a complicated problem, and it’s going to take a lot of people working together to come up with solutions.
Absolutely none of that will never happen if the 2A folks and the NRA don’t pull their heads out of their asses and start working toward real solutions (not “let’s arm all the teachers!”). They care more about their guns than they do about their kids, and you can’t fix that.

I would also add the destruction of millions of guns out there.

Fuck all of this. I'm so mad, sad, outraged that we are here again. It's every week. Why is nothing ever done? Why is this all just okay?
My DH didn't know. He called after work and I was just sad and he couldn't figure out why. I said, "obviously you've heard the news from today" and he hadn't. I told him and he just went silent. I thought I had lost him and 30 seconds later he said "I'm here...I'm just, I don't know what to say", with a quivering voice. This should not be our reality. The fact that this happening over and over and over and the GOP refuses wholeheartedly to do ANYTHING. They are monsters, every one of them.
You should all watch Senator Chris Murphy on the floor today. He makes an impassioned speech to his colleagues on the other side and he's not wrong. "What are we doing? Why are you here?" Here's a link for anyone who wants to see it.

I get that we need to deal with guns, but there's a deeper social/culture issue here....I feel like there's something deeply, sickly wrong with our society that we have so many people that are so demented and hate-filled and angry and radicalized to kill so ruthlessly. I know some of it is race based, but why all the schools and children?? And how do so many people not care?

I’m concerned that the outrage will pass when people figure out that these kids were brown
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Just fuck all this.
Same, except it was a breaking news notification on my phone and I have a 4th grader. My 10yo wanted to know why I was crying tonight and I don’t even know what to say anymore. My heart is absolutely breaking for these families.

Good guys with guns were there before the shooting happened and it still happened. And we have Texas leadership saying they want to arm teachers and put guards at elementary schools.
Republicans are, again, cautioning against reflexive action against guns. Like we haven't been trying to change the laws for several decades.
And god forbid we use a horrific tragedy as a motivation to try and prevent future horrific tragedies.
I’ve heard a lot of “you don’t need more gun laws, enforce the ones you already have” and false equivalence with DUIs, and some other horrific bullshit, so I stopped looking at the comments.
It’s really disheartening. I can no longer tell if it’s bots or if so many more people really feels these horrible ways.

It's not even the "hate filled, angry, radicalized" people that bother me so much. It's the people that are just so indifferent that they can't be bothered. It's the people that don't hate kids, but still prioritize their gun ownership over human beings. It's the people that think this is sad, but don't care enough to vote or take action.
There is most definitely something deeply wrong with our society, but it's not just radicalized people. It's everyone who is simply indifferent and unbothered. And I truly do not know how we overcome that.
