DD has an “unrealistic” fear of something bad happening in a public place, notably a restaurant. While in Hawaii, our first breakfast was interrupted by a screaming homeless man in the lobby. He was speaking a different language so we couldn’t even calm her by telling her what he was upset about. It was clear, to us, he was a harmless “regular” and the staff knew how to deal with him, but it didn’t help her fears and anxiety at all.
Point is, I can’t imagine having to try to reassure your kids that everything is going to be fine and then this happen so close to your home. I’m sorry it happened, I’m sorry it’s made you feel unsafe in your home and neighborhood and I’m sorry it’s fractured your kids’ safe place.

meganew, I hope your family is doing well and your children are feeling safe. I am sorry this happened to you. About 5 years ago I was driving with my boys through Boston and we witnessed a shooting (10 amd) when we were at an intersection. It was so on that street. I was more anxious than them for a few months, I felt very nervous in parking lots (we were not at one) and jumped at loud noises. Thinking of you and your family.
