I only briefly googled because I can't handle reading articles about this, but the snippet from NYT said he had two charges and each had a max sentence of 20 years. So he could've got 40 years and got a quarter of that? Or barely half if the sentences ran concurrently. What does it take to get a max sentence? Previously when this came out the officers were saying it was some of the worst stuff they've ever seen, and the judge mentioned that above as well.

The number of images is a factor. See previous page where the defense objections are listed.

Possession is a lesser included charge of the receiving charge, so the judge sentenced him on the more severe of the 2 which carries a max of 20 yrs. Even if sentenced on the 2 I read they run concurrently, so he wasn't truly ever up for 40 yrs.
He does have a 20 year probation once he is released where he can't be around children without supervision . That being said it's likely his wife and parents would be some of the supervised chaperones unless it ends up being court appointed chaperone.
I also read that he can't have a device connected to the internet unless he get specific permission from his parole officer.
Twenty years is a long time to not screw up; I just hope he gets caught and goes back to prison (is that how it works?)

Of course he'll screw up, but how many will suffer because of it?

When he’s out on supervised release, if he violates the terms the judge has the option to send him to prison but does not have to. Whether and how long they get sent to prison for depends on the nature of the violation (like one term is you can’t commit a crime, but if you get charged with like some small criminal traffic offense the judge may just admonish you and let you go) and the judge. Prison sentences for supervised release violations can also be for as few as 1 days, served only on weekends, etc. it’s much more flexible than the “main” sentence for the criminal offense.

While I wish it was longer...it's a step. The kids and Anna will have 12.5 years to try to make a new life for themselves. I hope they do, but Anna is unfortunately in really deep in this cult. Their kids should have a reasonable chance of getting out though. We'll see.

I don’t think this is true. She will remain at the home of Jim Bob. The kids will continue to be brainwashed.

The youngest is an infant, then 2 year old, then a 6 yr old. The older 4 have a chance to get out, but those youngest 3 are girls and won't be gone yet. He will serve 85%, so 10 yrs 6 months and likely time served counts too. Curious on the 20 yr probation after and can't see kids unless supervised. Does it mean he can't live with Anna till kids are out of house?
The Leaving Eden podcast has a good recap of everything today. Anna is completely out of touch with everything and thinks he's innocent. The letter she wrote to the judge confirms that. It will be very difficult for her or any of her kids to get out regardless if Josh is there or not.

It will depend on his case manager. JD will have to present a home plan when his eligibility comes up-the case manager will have to decide to accept his home plan. In the next ten years his lawyers also have a lot of opportunity to present arguments about why he should be allowed near his kids, etc. Unfortunately he has the resources to fight it, and even if he lists his parents as his home plan, if Anna is living on property it's virtually the same thing.

I've read Anna has been told and believes that this was all a set up by the government/Biden, so Josh is a Patriotic Hero to her.
Anna has at least one, maybe 2 siblings who are divorced, so it's not like it's verboten in her family. They're all still welcome at family events and everything. But she's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier and at this point, the Duggar influence is probably greater than her own family's.

Anna's own father wrote a character letter asking for Mercy for Josh. I have little hope for her getting out and at this point, I've moved past feeling bad for her and no just think she's an enabler. She's been through years of religious abuse - i get it - but she sat through the trials where details of the horrific CSA material was read so she can't play dumb like Michelle obviously is.

I read she left the courtroom before material details were shared.

Nope - She was there while they were described. She also apparently had a visual to the computer that showed the jury / judge some of the images.
