I’m resisting the urge to immediately start annoying my Moderna trial contact for unblinding.
Same. Their memo indicates that they have to wait for the FDA director to sign off so I’m holding until tomorrow morning. I think the sign off will happen tonight after both votes are finished. Fingers crossed for you! We are hoping for a crossover appt next week since we are sure we are placebo.
Before the Pfizer vote (also unanimously approved), Offit noted that two doses mean essentially no protection and he is worried parents will not understand that and possibly skip the third dose.

Do you happen to have a link for the memo? I’m not finding it anywhere.

The memo is internal to Moderna trial sites across the country but went to all the site PIs last week. I haven’t seen it but our coordinator told me about it when I asked clarifying questions about why she had different updated info on unblinding process. Our site is actually taking a list of people contacting them this evening (the system hasn’t been updated yet to unblind) and will prioritize early outreach for unblinding tomorrow so it may actually be worth calling now.

Covid (and the response, polarization, impact on the medical field and neurobehavioral service delivery) has taken so much from my children that we will never get back. I’m happy their vaccination is finally on the horizon but there’s a lot of damage done.
I cried when I listened in on my first VRBPAC meeting in winter 2020. Today I didn’t have the energy to cry if I wanted to. The antivax community sure brought the energy though. Good for them, I guess.

"Moderna’s vaccine is for children ages 6 months to 5 years, while Pfizer’s is for children ages 6 months to 4 years."
This makes me nervous. My youngest just turned 4, but it seems like our area predominantly has Pfizer distribution. I hope this doesn't somehow screw us.
Add me to the numb list. Yeah, great. Obviously I’ll be signing my 2 year old twins up ASAP for the vaccine, but they just had covid. My 5 year old got her second dose yesterday, but she also just had covid recently. At least the quarantines will end. I’ve taken off so much work this year, but luckily I have the PTO and I’m tenured with a union.

Pfizer is all kids under the age of 5, when they say 4 they’re including the whole year of age 4 up until their 5th birthday.

There is nothing to be nervous about. Your kid is 4 until the day of their 5th bday. They would get the younger kids' dose at any point when they are 4, then transition to the larger dose for any administered from 5th bday onward. There is no gap.

Hmm, I assumed she was nervous because she didn't want the Pfizer vaccine, but now I am not sure lol

I'm cool with either! Saying "to 4" sounds like "until 4" to me. But I guess I'm misreading
Florida is the only state not pre-ordering vaccines for kids, DeSantis spews some anti-vax BS when discussing it. God I hope this guy never gets near the White House.

The thought of DeSantis as president is terrifying.
It really is. And he's only 43, so short of him doing something far worse than he's already done (which I honestly don't think is even possible) that takes him out of contention with the party, I don't see how he goes away.
My hospital is opening spots for under 5 vaccination starting next Friday! 🎉 I have to check with the pedi, since my kiddo just had it, but if it's only 2 weeks post infection that she has to wait (that is the time period in my head for some reason) then I think she will be good to go!

He's only 43???!!!! He has big boomer energy
GEN X GETS TO CLAIM HIM!! Also the fact that he's only 43 is TERRIFYING. i'm going to have to listen to this jackwagon for the REST OF MY LIFE??
We got unblinded today. Placebo group. And since we have a recent infection, she can’t get vaccinated until August. 😭😭😭😭
I’m so sorry. We are also confirmed placebo as of our unblinding today and will cross over on Wednesday morning.
I’m confused about the recent infection delaying - ACIP is talking about it this weekend but unless the study has a special ban on vaccination post-infection it shouldn’t cause any delay once the child is finished with the 10 day isolation period/testing negative. It is VERY unlikely that the approval for either vaccine will require a waiting period beyond that so in your shoes I’d drop withdraw from the trial and get the vaccine elsewhere according to whatever the rules are. There’s no reason you need to wait until august but I’m sorry this is added stress right now.

I'm in the AstraZeneca trial which obviously hasn't been approved in the US. When I was unblinded and found out I was placebo and told them I was going to get vaccinated they told me that they still wanted me in the trial and that they were still following participants. I know it's obviously different for kids to drag them to appts and draw blood, but I thought it was important to still stay in the trial to add to the scientific data. Based on the info I've seen one doesn't have to wait to get vaccinated after an infection past their isolation period.

The Moderna person said that the CDC recommendation is 3 months after a recent infection, and that our pediatrician likely wouldn’t do it either. I’ll call my pediatrician and see what they say.
There’s also the potential that we could be offered a new bivalent vaccine. A doctor friend of mine heard that was being offered to some of the placebo families, and she thinks it’s worthwhile to stay in if we can be offered that.

That is no longer the CDC recommendation for any other age group and there is no CDC recommendation for this age group yet until tomorrow anyways. What a weird thing for them to say. I have to assume the person you spoke with was misinformed. If it were me and I wanted to stay in the trial I’d call the IRB contact directly to ask if that is the trial protocol (IRB number is on your consent.) I’ll tell you right now I know kids in the trial who got covid between dose 1 and dose 2 and they got dose 2 on time on delayed by a few days if they were still in their isolation period so this is not an across the board rule within the trial. Fingers crossed you can get some better intel. The sites say all sorts of stupid things and sadly a lot of them are wrong and it causes stress for no reason. Either way I think there is almost no chance the official CDC recommendation will include a long wait between covid infection and the vaccine series so you should be able to get the vaccine easily outside of the trial without waiting.
Access to the booster is also a major motivator for us to stay in the trial. According to their statements at both meetings this week, Moderna will be offering regular and bivalent boosters to the current <6 trial kids. It isn’t clear how it will be determined who gets what. A few sites seem to be crossing placebo kids over into a new bivalent original series study but that is less common (ours isn’t 😭) I have hope that the placebo kids in particular will get a bivalent booster bc I think that protocol amendment will be finished by then for sure.

Interesting. That’s no longer the recommendation I’ve seen from the cdc and other info that we get sent. All I’ve seen is to wait until after isolation and that you CAN wait until 3 months but not that you have to. Considering people are getting infected again well within 3 months I think additional protections sooner makes sense. I know where I work in the building where giving vaccines they give them to anyone as long as you haven’t had a positive test in the past 10 days and you don’t have a fever. Maybe the moderna person meant the cdc is going to change the recommendation to wait until 3 months for the under 5 kids?

Based on today’s meeting discussion I’d be way shocked if the CDC goes that way. They specifically discussed the need to get this age group vaccinated now regardless of prior Omicron infection. Immunity is so poor with Omicron and its subvariants. This is just one tweet with a transcript of the comments from Dr. Marks but this was brought up several times.

Maybe the Moderna person I was speaking with was way misinformed? Strange! My daughter has a normal check in with the trial scheduled for Tuesday. I’ll ask more and find out then.

I am struggling to keep up.
My son turns 5 in early July, but I couldn’t get him a wellness visit appt until almost August He’s going to lose his #%^* so I want to wait for a pedi visit to do it. Now that moderna is available for him, should I be doing that for him? The rest of us had Pfizer. My 10yo is also due for the booster so I will probably just wait for him to get his done then also. Should I switch him up also to moderna?
