House Democrats’ proposal, the Protecting Our Kids Act, would ban the manufacture and sale of high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, raise the purchasing age for AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifles to 21 from 18, establish new federal offenses for gun trafficking and straw purchasing and new requirements for gun storage at home. It also would ensure so-called ghost guns are subject to existing federal firearms regulations.

(Murphy) and other Senate negotiators are discussing changes to improve the background check system and regulations for gun storage. They also are crafting a proposal that would encourage states to enact red-flag laws. The talks are exploring spending on mental-health treatment and bolstering school security, two policies Republicans have said could protect against shootings.

The House also will vote next week on the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, which would implement a nationwide red-flag law and provide federal grants to encourage states to establish their own, Mrs. Pelosi said in a letter to members on Thursday.

This is from a WSJ article in my Apple news app so I can’t link, but the article is worth reading. Jim Jordan called it radical and says the Protect Our Kids law has no path forward, a dude from FL who was at home in Zoom kept holding up his guns and complaining that his magazines would be banned and he can do whatever he wants in his own house with his own guns, McConnell says the Bipartisan stuff better honor “our culture” which means we are doomed because our culture is deranged.   How 👏 is 👏 this👏 radical👏

They think it’s a losing issue because the extremists are the loudest but it’s popular among most voters, even among Republicans who don’t own guns or who own guns but are not 2A absolutists.

mcConnell is SUCH a fucking shit pig (sorry pigs).  I truly hate him with every fiber of my being.  Trump opened many doors to hate and people "telling it like it is", but McConnel is the real threat to this country because he holds SO MUCH power.  More than one person in our government should.

The bipartisan thing in progress sure is. Not even the minimum.  Encourages states to set their own red flag laws?

The legislation passed by a mostly party-line vote of 223-204. It has almost no chance of becoming law as the Senate pursues negotiations focused on improving mental health programs, bolstering school security and enhancing background checks. But the House bill does allow Democratic lawmakers a chance to frame for voters in November where they stand on policies that polls show are widely supported.

I am not up on who all is in the Senate beyond what I hear about the worst of the worst and that's mostly from what you all post here.

I read that because the Senate is split at 50 R and 50 D senators, the Democrats would have to find 10 Republican senators to get to 60 to make this pass and that they realistically will not find these 10.

So there aren't 10 Republican Senators who think that this is a reasonable bill and willing to join in and support it? Just 10 people with a conscience and working brain who aren't emotionally broken?

pretty much. There was one r in buffalo who was willing to say this is bull shit, and he just dropped out after extreme criticism

The likelihood that something tragic happens as a result of this seems much higher than the likelihood that they would stop a shooter with an AR-15.

I feel like no one wants to talk about the likelihood of a teacher snapping and using their gun on a student. I know it's absolutely terrible to think about, but schools are already at a boiling point- throw in some guns with minimal training and I feel like its a when, not an if scenario.

As an Ohio teacher, the gun law (and honestly, a lot of what’s happening in Ohio right now) is terrifying. I’ve had students break into cabinets because they knew there was candy on there. I’ve had students go after others with scissors. The trauma teachers deal with is real. Adding guns to the mix?

We’ve even had the fraternal order of the police say this is a horrible idea.

I think the Ohio legislature is focused on turning us into North Florida.
