As the mom as a non-binary kid, this enrages me. Florida wants to make it a a crime — punishable by potentially having your parental rights terminated — to bring your children to a drag show.
This would enrage me no matter what, but when I think about how important it’s been to connect my child to a community of others like them — including in art and pop culture — this just hits even harder.

FFS the "small government" people sure like the government telling people what to do (as long as those people are something other than cishet white, Christian men 🙄). I can't understand why people care so much about what other people do when it has ZERO effect on them.
I share your outrage because it is such POLITICAL THEATRE to pretend outrage and concern for a child attending an event with singing and dancing and dress up.
And as a former social worker in the field of child protection services, it is deranged to imagine that a CPS worker would petition a judge to remove a child from a home for “imminent danger” - the standard for removing any child, never mind the complicated and intense standard for terminating a parent’s parental rights for attending a show.
Fuck you DeSantis and your dishonest faux support.

FFS.
And what = drag? When I was a kid, do you know how many school productions used cross-dressing when they needed a specific set of skills in a role (so-and-so is a boy but can sing and dance, so here's this role; so-and-so is a girl but we need more "boys" in the background for this scene, etc.)
A kid watches something like Mrs. Doubtfire at a friend's house. It's performance, technically involving cross-dressing. *I* wouldn't consider it drag (nor would most sane people) but give these idiots a way to take someone's kids if they disagree...
I know my wording is imperfect here - I apologize for that. This pisses me right off.
So…would it be illegal to take your child to any theater or musical performance where people are dressed in costume? Or only if that costume is the “wrong” (wtf??) gender for the actor? What about Kabuki? Would old-school Shakespeare (where male actors played in the female roles) have been considered “drag”?
Exactly WHAT about drag is harmful to kids? This won’t stand up in any kind of court, and is political theater. But hoooo boy people sure are praising DeSantis for this shit and I’m glad we got the hell out of the Florida panhandle to a place where there are actual Democrats in large and powerful numbers.
