The Tories have enacted a bill that is basically illegal internationally and will, most likely, lead to a trade war which we can't win, all to make a few very rich people and Putin happy. It looks like it may lead to the Troubles reappearing in Ireland/N. Ireland and cause an even worse recession. Fun times.

Liz Truss, Britain’s foreign secretary, on Monday published “reasonable and practical” legislation to rip up parts of Boris Johnson’s 2020 Brexit deal with the EU, relating to trading arrangements in Northern Ireland.

The Northern Ireland protocol was agreed by Johnson to address the unique situation of the region after Brexit, Northern Ireland remaining in the EU’s single market for goods and retaining an open border on the island of Ireland.

Truss insisted the unilateral rewriting of the protocol would “support political stability” in the region.

The bill, if enacted, will allow ministers to “fix” problems identified in the protocol by giving them powers in domestic law to unilaterally override the Brexit treaty with the EU.


And the response from the EU?


The EU is poised to launch legal action against the UK after ministers controversially claimed an emergency loophole allowed them to scrap post-Brexit checks and standards in Northern Ireland.



In a surprising admission, the UK government accepted that its new Northern Ireland protocol bill would mean it did not meet its obligations under international law.



It justified the move under a principle called the “doctrine of necessity”, claiming the protocol was causing “peril” to society and politics in Northern Ireland because of the threat to the Good Friday agreement.



Johnson insisted the changes in the legislation were “relatively trivial” measures designed to ease trade disruption between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, as the bill was published on Monday.



But the EU said it would launch legal action for infringing the protocol and a majority of members of the Northern Ireland assembly accused Johnson of being the reckless one by destabilising the Good Friday agreement.


Every day, it seems as if the Tories are trying to do more and more awful things and the country is getting worse and worse as a place to live. Foodbank use is up, the NHS is being crippled, cost of living is rising well above what is happening in all of Europe, we're deporting people to Rawanda (at a cost that is more than what it would take to house and feed people for life), etc, etc.
