186momx- pads today are so freaking thin that I can’t imagine they would be bulky, even with a leo. Especially the ones made for younger girls. Have you let her just try one?

k3am I found that throwing bubbles into the bath and letting them soak it off for a long time before scrubbing helps. My kids would also take an hour long bath if I let them.
k3am can you find a bar soap that has more of a pumas grit to it. DH prefers Irish Springs Icy Blast to help get the grim off him. He looks like pig pen all the time and doesn't care.
mommyatty, the ones I had in the cupboard were panty liner style and she said they were too bulky.
xctsclrx, I tried a knock off version of Thinx, and I either left them on too long, my body is sensitive to wet material, and/ or it doesn't wick enough, but I did end up getting a rash, so there went that idea.
k3am I second the recommendation for some sort of exfoliating soap. I also keep an old fashioned back scrubber in the shower for the same reason. It's the worst on the mineral sunscreens that create casting.

Should I be discussing period products with DD? Shit. I have not. I thought I was ahead of the game with our open dialogue but I’m not sure we’ve covered just how, exactly, one stays relatively clean during that time. My mom just handed me a box of tampons, some KY jelly, and told me to read the instructions.
sdlaura, thanks for the oven s’mores tip. We are supposed to have people over for a s’more roast tomorrow that was already postponed once but now the heat is supposed to break with a 70% chance of thunderstorms. Good to have a backup plan.

librarychica, KY Jelly? Was that for using tampons? Or was that her sex talk?
I had no sex talk and no tampon instruction from my mom either. I remember one Saturday morning the week before sex ed started at school, she woke me up and told me I was going to start bleeding one day without much explanation. Scared the shit out of me.

To ease the tampon insertion if a little help was required.
Her sex talk was held in a Hardee’s parking lot one morning and was vague at best. It was followed a few years late by the birth control talk, which her walking into my bedroom while my friends and I were hanging out and announcing that she had discovered “so many new forms” of BC that they “didn’t have in my day, girls. All sorts of options on aisle 12 at Walgreens.”
You guys are making me so glad I grew up with a dozen older female cousins. (I’m not exaggerating, there are 26 grandkids on my mom’s side and I’m toward the end of the pack.) Not that anyone bothered having any talks with me, but they talked to each other and I eavesdropped like a pro.
librarychica I see our moms both read the same instruction manual.. on all counts basically.
Our neighbor friend kids are both about 13 now. One got her period last summer and is very expressive/open and talks about it in front of DD, so there have been so many period conversations. I’m hoping DD has better luck with it than I did.
