We just bought our first house. I'm paralyzed by too many paint color options for the living room. It's small. It has windows facing west and south. H says he has no opinion beyond something "more interesting" than the color of our apartment walls (Agreeable Gray) and "no lime green" (his way of saying he'll be fine with whatever I choose because we have similar tastes).
Hardwood floors. Our couches are charcoal dark gray. I gravitate toward cool shades.
redheadbaker, F&B is super expensive, but you could try to color match. If I were you, I would pick something like a rug, curtains, throw pillows, or other interesting thing for the room and pull the color from that item. It's much harder to find decor to match your paint than to find paint to match your decor.
See if there's a color consultant at your local Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams store. Their services are free assuming you (or your painter) buy your supplies from them. I had to pick colors for our entire house (new build) and I'm not the type to pick just one or two for the whole place--some might call me crazy, LOL--but to do all that I needed help narrowing down options. The color consultant had me bring in samples of things in the rooms, asked me about lighting, etc. and helped pick some great options. In my case, I was able to bring in tile, cabinet, counter, and carpet samples because we were building, but she originally suggested bringing in things like a favorite bedspread to help her get ideas.
I've read several times that your paint color should be the last thing you pick. It's hard to follow that advice, but I learned the hard way that it's also very good to follow that advice! (I ended up repainting my entire main living space less than a year after painting because I painted first and then the wall color didn't look good with the other things I picked out later.) So I whole-heartedly agree with the PP who suggested deciding on your rug or a statement piece of artwork and then building your room around that. I did that on my second go-around and am much happier with how everything turned out.
