Dining Room light placement

how do you know where the dining room light goes when you don't have a finished space or even a dining table...?  

Just put the box in the middle of the room  - this style doesn't have a chain and feel it would look weird to transition it that way.  We have the light - but can't figure out where to put it...

My first house had 3 electrical boxes in the dining room. The light went into one and the others had covers. Maybe something like this is a good option?

We had our guy find the center of our dining area. The final spot was just to the side of it because there was a joist to work around.

I would figure out where the table would go if you had one. The middle would hopefully still be the middle regardless of whether the table is bigger or smaller.
