In his efforts to remake higher education in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed laws that alter the tenure system, remove Florida universities from commonly accepted accreditation practices, and mandate annual âviewpoint diversity surveysâ from students and faculty.
DeSantis (R) also pushed through legislation he dubbed the âStop WOKE Actâ that regulates what schools, including universities, and workplaces can teach about race and identity. The legislation â which went into effect Friday â already faces a legal challenge.
DeSantis has said he wants to prevent the stateâs colleges and universities from becoming âhotbeds for stale ideologiesâ and from developing âintellectually repressive environments.â
Yeah, I donât think he realizes that messing with how FL colleges are accredited will mean that students canât get Federal student loans or tuition assistance (ie: GI bill or federal scholarships) to attendâŠ

Oh I think he or his advisors probably know. Itâs like with K-12 public schools - part of the point is to try to shut down the public school system by hollowing it out until it canât function anymore.

He knows. He specifically says degrees are overpriced pieces of paper. He doesnât want people going to college. He cleared the way for hiring without degrees, licenses, and credentials.

He does this all the time. Announces these big plans, or proposals knowing full well they will get challenged. But he doesnât care, because the real reason for all this is to show off his Trumpian bonafides so heâll get more supporters. Whether it gets challenged or not, it doesnât matter. If his stuff gets passed itâs a win, if it doesnât itâs still a win because âhe showed them!â
In the meantime, us Florida residents are left to pick up the pieces from whatever collateral damage came from his antics.
He is very dangerous, and has a very good chance of getting the 2024 nomination. I hope Dems have some sort of game plan, because weâll need it.

Interesting considering he has degrees from Yale and Harvard...
That asshole went to two Ivy League colleges. As a white, cis-het, wealthy, educated man, he is as privileged as they come. Why canât people see through this âIâm against the eliteâ bullshit?

He definitely plays up his grandpa (? Think thatâs right) immigrated from Cuba when it suits.
He was an asshole in high school; not surprised that heâs continuing to look out for himself.

They donât!

Not even a small one This election is going to be a joke. The dem candidates are milquetoast at best (including a former R governor). Scuttlebutt is that the national Dem party has basically written off Florida. When we sell our house we will hopefully be paying off prepaid college for our younger two kids. This has always felt like a big accomplishment to me. We are a middle class one income family and giving them an option for no debt college felt like such an impossibility ⊠this news honestly just made me cry.

it's so frustrating. I think I've come to the same realization that the Dems have made certain calculations in their plans, and Florida is not in it. I get it, we've become more red than purple, but there used to be a fight for us as one of the biggest electoral gets. I think that's over, and the blue cities here will be the casualties.

But thatâs a shit-ton of money from the federal government that goes to the state.

Unsurprisingly, he was also an asshole in college. You canât change your stripes đ€·ââïž

Does bright futures still exist? I would not be in the least surprised if it's been decimated with deathSantis. I know a bunch of people who went to college debt free because of it which of course is anathema to these jackwads.

Bright Futures is still around. Test scores got raised since we were kids (I went to school for free on it) and the funding structure is slightly different, but most of the changes happened years ago. DeSantis did announce recently that working hours could count for volunteer hours as a way to reduce burden on students who have to work to help their families. Test scores are still the big barrier to entry.

I think heat40 has it right above. DeSantis is probably well aware that this proposal could never lead to functioning legislation. But Republicans don't really seem to care anymore about actual governance. They are all about cultural warrior talk that appeals to a large swath of the electorate, and subsequently gets them elected. Once they've gained power, they don't care what actually happens.
I just wonder how far this game goes before things start collapsing.

I donât know all of the ins and outs of the proposal, but letting kids use work instead of community service sounds like a great idea. Of course Chad is going get uncle Maximillian to give him a cushy summer job and use that instead of going to a soup kitchenâŠ.

I had 75% Bright Futures and was grateful for the help. I recently saw the new scores and I wouldn't even get anything now. But I'm glad the program is still around. And to be honest my volunteer hours were either with the school library or my youth group. Nothing I would consider legit. I just paid 59k for two Florida Prepaid 4 year university plans for my 4 and 6 year old. I really hope he doesn't wreck the university system before they get there.

Arguably its equitable but really the purpose is just to support capitalism rather than nonprofits who could use volunteer support.
