Maybe if they were banned EVERYWHERE, he couldn’t have gotten the rifles 💡
Even though Highland Park’s municipal government banned assault-style guns within city limits in 2013, Covelli said Crimo managed to legally obtain two rifles – including one styled after an AR-15 – and at least three other guns in the general Chicago area, many parts of which do not enforce such restrictions.
Both parents of a 2-year-old boy were among the seven people killed in Monday's mass shooting during a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, CBS Chicago reports. Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35, were separated from their son, Aiden, when the gunfire erupted.

In September 2019, Highland Park Police went to Crimo's home after a family member reported that he had said he was going to kill everyone, according to Covelli.
Police confiscated a collection of bladed items -- 16 knives, a dagger and a sword -- but made no arrests because there were no signed complaints against Crimo. Highland Park Police did notify state police about the visit. Involuntary commitment wasn't an option, Covelli said.
State Police Master Sgt. Delilah Garcia said they looked at whether Crimo had a firearm owner's identification card that should have been revoked, but he had no card (so naturally he was able to legally obtain one!)

One of the tweets in that message board lost I linked was his dad liking some stupid shit about defend 2A like your life depends on it, from May right after Uvalde. So, yeah. Let’s charge him too. Charge them all.

“Responsible gun owners,” amirite?
I’m glad that Karen Macdonald is charging Crumbleys parents because hopefully it will deter other parents just like this one.

Wtf. May his father rot in jail along with his son.

Can his father be held accountable as well?
I would love for that to happen, but I won’t be surprised if there is nothing that can be done against him. His son was an adult when the application was submitted, and if the complaint was ultimately rescinded, there was no crime. We just can’t depend on MAGA assholes to do the right thing.

I know you mean well, but can you delete the meal trains links? Let's not subject traumatized families (who were attacked by a stranger) to the possibility of more complete strangers showing up on their doorstep, no matter how well meaning.
Let's leave those links and meals for people who know them well enough to get that info from a personal connection, not off a public message board.

Pretty sure they’re are posted out there on the web, it’s not like UWR know these people personally, you can always order a gift card, which it looks like many have done.
I'm sure that's true. It just feels icky and intrusive to be yet another place their addresses are being broadcast. We can't stop others from putting them at greater risk, but we don't have to participate either.
ETA: Chicago news sucks if they are broadcasting info with people's home addresses. How long before Alex Jones style fuckers show up to harass them and call them crisis actors? I hate people sometimes.

I looked up the FOID sponsorship form and it could go either way, I think. “understand I shall be liable for any damages resulting from the minor applicant’s use of firearms or firearm ammunition.” If he bought those weapons for him as a minor, there could be wiggle room. But he committed the murders as an adult, so, hard to say.

It’s being broadly shared, but I deleted.
So, Go Fund Me rubs me the wrong way because it seems like a popularity contest.
Unfortunately, people are killed and wounded by all sorts of things, including gun violence, every day, with no social safety net to catch them. The violence in Highland Park really sucks. However, Highland Park is an extremely affluent area, and unfortunately many much more underprivileged people were also affected by other gun violence.
For instance, the one woman who was killed was a doctor's wife. So, why are we all seeing a link to have gift cards for restaurants sent to her house. Can't the doctor's family afford their own restaurant meals? If we don't personally know these people, wouldn't the "gift" of gift cards make a bigger impact to one of the other families outside of this tragedy who were also affected by violence over the weekend?

If you have a GFM to share, please do. I’m not going to remove those links, however.
Obviously gun violence happens regularly and I often donate to GFMs that receive less attention. However, I live 20 minutes from HP. This is a community we visit often and it has hit close to home for our family. Additionally, I’m not going to shit on trying to help people who were at a parade where over 50 people were shot and 7 people lost their lives.

Jesus, do you make it your mission to randomly pop into threads and shit all over everything?
First, I agree GFM has a lot of issues. But that’s a discussion for a separate thread.
Second…anyone who loses a loved one is probably not in the mood to cook. It’s not about affordability, AT ALL. A meal train is a way for people to show they care and for people grieving to think about one less chore to do. If I knew this grieving family I would never ever be like “Well, she was married to a doctor so he can afford his own food, no need for me to help!” Wtf, no.

Because that person was a victim of a heinous crime, and the family is likely having a hard time. Full fucking stop. If you would like to donate more to those that you deem more worthy, please do so.
However, I refuse to participate in some sort of victim ranking system where people are deemed worthy enough based on some external value system placed on them. The family could also decline the funds & return them.
But it’s really not a good time to be judgy of people hurting and in need. FFS

WTF? I may have been out of line asking for the meal train to be deleted (since it is widely circulated). Alex Jones and his ilk have me paranoid and I don't want to risk helping someone stalk them.
But you don't want to risk helping someone feed them? WTF? If you don't want to donate, don't.
Sorry underwaterrhymes , for any role I played in abetting that nonsense.
Crimo disclosed to police that after fleeing Highland Park, he happened upon a gathering in or near Madison, Wisconsin., and considered attacking people there with a rifle he had in his car.
Covelli said Crimo decided against it because he had not conducted enough advance planning. He also said Crimo has an infatuation with the numbers seven and four, which is why Crimo decided to conduct his attack on July 4.

This shooting victim— a rich school superintendent, btw— has an 8-year-old son who was also shot in the chest, his spinal cord was severed, and he is currently in critical condition. So this is who you’re saying doesn’t deserve a fucking Panera gift card. gofund.me/06cc31e5
underwaterrhymes, maybe add this one to your post? I don’t see the Roberts family there and don’t remember donating to that one yesterday.
“I had no -- not an inkling, warning -- that this was going to happen,” Crimo told ABC News about the Fourth of July attack his son, Robert “Bobby” Crimo III, carried out in Highland Park, Il. “I am just shocked.”
Crimo claims both he and his wife asked their son just days before if he had any plans for the holiday. “He said ‘no.’ That was it,” Crimo recalled. (Did you think he was going to tell you what he had planned?!)
“Making threats to the family … I think [that was] taken out of context,” Crimo said about authorities’ description of the 2019 incident. “It's like just a child's outburst, whatever he was upset about, and I think his sister called the police -- I wasn’t living there.” (I wasn’t living there or a witness to it, but I totally know his sister had no reason whatsoever to be scared for her life)
What the literal fuck is wrong with some of you. These people have experienced the worst tragedy and you're begrudging them help because "they can afford it"? Go. Fuck. Yourself.

Leaving aside the utter insensitivity of begrudging someone a restaurant gift card, even in a more affluent area, healthcare (and long term care) in this country are so fucked up that one event like this could easily wipe out someone’s entire life savings (to say nothing of the funeral industrial complex).
I hate the idea of GoFundMe because of what it represents: that we should rely on people’s generosity during tragedy instead of having an adequate social safety net. But being upset about it being a “popularity contest” is kind of missing the forest for the trees.
