HP is one of our favorite places to take our kids as we are just 20 minutes north.
Unconfirmed, but someone on abc7 just said that she heard 57 shot and 9 dead, but obviously that could be wildly inaccurate since this still an active scene and the shooter is at large.

This is horrific. I got the alert on my phone as I was marching with my family in our local parade. I was so concerned about something like this happening at a parade anywhere and I am heartbroken that it did happen. I’m so sorry to all of you in the area.
I heard about this from this thread. I thought originally you meant Chicago proper. Highland Park is north and we’ve gone to Ravinia many times. We are ok.
1. I hate the US right now. 2. I went to Canada and it just happened to be a crowded beach because it was Canada day and I thought to myself well at least I won’t get shot on this crowded beach because I’m in Canada.

I don’t know if we have any posters living specifically in Highland Park, but since we visit often and live about 20 minutes away, I thoughts I’d broaden the scope since I suspect others probably go there relatively often as well.

Does it matter if it is Chicago or the suburbs? Why does this distinction matter?

It doesn’t matter. Just the way I read the OP.
An event in Chicago might be larger so I did have fear of more casualties. The locations are very different settings. But again in the end it doesn’t matter.
Since I found out here on this post the way it was titled would be meaningful to someone just hearing about it.

To be fair, I do say Highland Park in the OP. Just not the title. But I changed the title to be more specific.
This country is on fire, and Republicans have their hands on the hose, but just stand around saying, “fires don’t kill people, the people who start fires kill people.” For fuck’s sake, turn on the hose and fight the fire; don’t just let people burn!

Thanks for clarifying, because there is a lot of racism at work when people talk about gun violence and Chicago.

Yes you did. I just had a moment, and then read farther. I also know more people in Chicago than in Highland Park so maybe that’s why.

I think it’s because I know people that could be at a parade in Chicago, so I had a minute of panic that they were shot at.
A friend of a friend lives there and was at the parade, so her post popped up on my FB feed. They are safe and are sheltered-in-place in their home, not leaving. Police told everyone in the area to shelter-in-place. Several surrounding communities have canceled events for today due to safety concerns with the gunman at loose.
We’re about 45 minutes away from HP, my out of state family was texting and asking if we were ok before I even knew what had happened while we were at our own city’s parade. We canceled our plans for the day because it is so heartbreaking
I was at a rather sparsely attended community event with a few bands playing. I saw this come across Twitter and had a couple thoughts go through my head. Like bronxgirl , something about America celebrating independence, which was won with guns. Followed by a tear and then looking for the closest large tree, in case I needed to hide behind it.
I feel like screaming what it going on?! But yet, it’s clear what is going on. Guns are more important than people, especially female people.
There are people out there who see these as early skirmishes in a building war on what we thought we had become.
for the first time in memory, I have no desire to go back out and see fireworks tonight. It was always my favorite thing.
Watching CNN right now and they have a person of interest. They gave his name and license plate as they believe he is driving and left the area. Considered armed and dangerous.
That article has his name, car, and plate number as an FYI for people in the area. Even living a couple hours away, I will be on the lookout as who knows where he went from there.

Googling him reveals he is a rapper and he posted this shit last year (a weird video with guns and classrooms, about being a sleepwalker with no free will who should just do it)
