I had read that I was shocked 1. That he resigned and 2. A successor has to be chosen. Admittedly my political knowledge is largely centered on US politics but I was surprised that there isn’t a line of succession. Like I thought he would have a Vice prime minister…

If you'll remember, they've already been through this a few years ago when Theresa May resigned. That's how BoJo got elected.
He doesn't care about the successor. He's staying because of the party he's throwing to commemorate his wedding because it's at the country residence of the PM, which he wouldn't have access to if he left today.
“I tell you that the prime minister will not go early — because it is simply not in his nature … It is a wonderful and necessary fact of political biology that we never know when our time is up. We kid ourselves that we must stay because we would be ‘letting people down’ or that there is a ‘job to be finished.’ In reality, we are just terrified of the comedown.”

Also, the wedding reception at Chequers thing is so perfectly self-centered and venal, lol.
Boris has zero shame, it was his party colleagues who do have some shame* who forced his hand.
Unfortunately no Republicans have any shame, this is why we are fucked.
*Eta-I think an even better word might be cringe: a uniquely British state of shame, awkwardness and embarrassment.
Not even that - they realised that he was no longer an asset for their own future runs as MPs and that keeping him there meant that they might lose their seats in the next election. Believe me, they have NO shame, just focus on themselves over anyone else. (not all of them, but the majority)

Actually it's because he wants to give positions to others who will eventually make sure he makes money/has some power. (He was told he can't have that party)
