Secret Service Deleted Texts re: Jan. 6th

A watchdog says the U.S. Secret Service deleted many of the text messages sent during a two-day period surrounding the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The inspector general for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the agency, told Congress the messages were deleted after his office asked for them.

The discovery was made as part of the watchdog's investigation into the deadly siege last year and will likely play into the probe being led by the House select committee investigating the attack.

The news was first reported by The Intercept.

"The Department notified us that many U.S. Secret Service (USSS) text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021, were erased as part of a device-replacement program," Inspector General Joseph Cuffari wrote to top members of congressional Homeland Security committees. "The USSS erased those messages after OIG requested records of electronic communications from the USSS, as part of our evaluation of the events at the Capitol on January 6."

I'm an acquaintance of someone who serves the first family in the secret service and the way he spoke about the Obamas/Clintons vs Trump gave a very clear indication of who he voted for, and according to him the feelings were widespread. So much for country over party.

Like, at the time even watching 1/6 on TV in horror I always felt like there is no possible way this election could be stolen. Like, not in this country. Now I realize just how close they were.

A family friend has a grandson who is secret service covering POTUS (Clinton onward) and family. He is the sort whose loyalty is based on the perks he receives. He carried on loudly about a Motel 6 in which he was put up during a smalltown campaign stop with Dr. Biden. FTR, she stayed there as well. I am told his feelings are typical of the unit members, too.

It sounds like the way that the SS was supposed to "back-up" their texts was to send screenshots of them? I guess that is effective if you trust the people to not just delete anything incriminating before taking a screenshot.
