Well, we make up 35% of the US workforce and we are the largest living generation by # of people / percentage so we would have a disproportionate affect on everything.
I think it’s kind of arbitrary though. If a couple years of us old millennials (xennial/ Oregon trail generation) we’re lumped in with Gen X and the youngest millennials were lumped in with Gen Y, that would make all the groups close to equal. The year thresholds for boomer and millennial have changed over time and I’m always wondering who decides these things?!
"Poll showed that 61% of millennials and Gen Z felt they would never be able to afford most of the things they want in life."
Damn the millennials for wanting to buy food and drive a car that isn't nearly falling apart! Maybe even having a mattress that isn't painful to sleep on.
I might have the most boring friends ever, but none of us are buying flashy things. H and I just ordered a NEW couch and ottoman - our first new/not Ikea furniture purchase ever. We're 35! Where are these millennials spending money on frivolous stuff?
Almost all of our furniture is second-hand, in every room. Our mattress is 14? years old. We don’t have a matching bedroom set, which I think is when I believe I’ll have “made it” as an adult. And every time we get in a spot where we think we might have some extra cash to treat ourselves to something new, some other house or car repair or medical bill or something comes up and it gets pushed aside again. We have focused on home improvements so it’s been a worthwhile way to spend our money but still, I’d like to sit on my couch without my ass practically hitting the floor underneath.
Am I understanding that they're suggesting that millenials are causing the current inflation by NOT having had money to buy these things 10 years ago and now that they're coming up on 40 they FINALLY have saved up money for a downpayment or have the breathing room for nice vacations and therefore BOOM inflation?

Tail end of the Boomers, and I didn't have a matching bedroom set until I was 45.
And there's always something eating up discretionary funds. New tires, $2K on dog issues. So I feel your pain.

LOLOLOL
I mean, k. sure.
economists are hilarious.
Right? Like, sorry I couldn't buy jack shit in my 20s since I was going to college and grad school like I was supposed to and then trying to survive the last recession.

This is exactly why we ordered a new couch! Ours is ~10 year old Ikea, was second hand to us, and squeaks and creaks every time you sit down. I wasn't really sure we'd make it the 3 weeks to delivery without this one actually giving out. We pushed it to the very end of its life.

I'm extremely lucky to have inherited gorgeous mid-century furniture from my old boomer mom who bought it in the actual mid-century. Without that I probably would be 2nd hand until Ikea became an option.
Even now, I'm on the shittiest of mattresses. Due to location and circumstance, furnished apt is my only choice and boy have some been pretty awful. My back is too old to sleep on a shot mattress. Pass the bottle of alleve. Oh, wait, not OTC here. Pharmacist, can you please give me 10 alleve?
But, sure, blame millenials for events set in motion and made worse by boomers.

Lol forever. I guess this is totally my fault. We just ordered our first bedroom set ever (using DH’s childhood bedroom set for the past 15 years has been just great), and also ordered new couches a month ago.
We have never spent any money like this in our entire lives, but you know, two years with no vacations and loads of overtime mean that we are actually flush for the first time in our lives. Sorry!
We have literally seen years of profit from the best jobs, investments, inheritances, deals on goods for boomers but sure, when the bill for a proxy war, failing infrastructures, climate change, overdue market corrections, comes due…it’s everyone else’s fault. Sounds old and white.
don’t look at me. oh wait we never count. signed GenX
"Just along for the ride." Gen X as the boomers and millennials blame each other. But hey, at least we're raising Gen Z who are looking to burn the entire world to the ground.

All of our existential despair has transferred to them.

And they have the energy to do something about it.

We JUST got a new mattress/bed. Ours was nearly 17 years old. We were toying with refinancing our mortgage, but with the rates going up we won't be doing that. Now we're sort of being forced to remodel our bathroom since our shower drain failed and leaked into our living room. Our house was built in the mid-90s and we've also had to upgrade the entire HVAC system, and get a new water heater.
Looking around my (rented) apt and every single piece of furniture save a newish chair and a vintage console is either gifted to us or hand-me downs. It works with our mish mash mcm / vintage aesthetic tho.
