I've been trying to settle on an area rug for the family room for about a year now. I don't feel any more sure now than I did when I started, but I'm getting tired of not having one. Help! Here's the room.
The walls are SW Worldly Gray. Trim and bookcases are Alabaster, and the backs of the bookcases are SW Underseas. The eventual plan is to redo the fireplace, replace the mirror, and do real built ins, but this is where we are for the near term. I don't necessarily plan any significant departures from this in terms of color.
There's a lot of greens and greenish blues in the rest of the house. The adjoining kitchen is SW Worldly Gray, but the office is SW Rainwashed, dining room is SW Moody Blue, etc. There is art with blues and greens in the gray rooms. So, long story short, I'm looking for a rug that goes with the blues and greens here and elsewhere. I need 9x12, and I think I would like maybe medium pile, ish, so that it feels somewhat cozy. The kids play in here, and this is the primary relaxing/TV watching space. Only such space, actually, until we finish part of the basement.
I think I may want to avoid one that has a defined center of the pattern, because the room has a very clear mid-point, and if the rug isn't centered on it, I might like to de-emphasize that.
I like the colors of this one, but not the price tag for a room where kids/dogs congregate:
This one came up as similar, at a price much easier to stomach.
I like this one, but I'm afraid the centric design may not be a best choice for this room:
Overall, I've looked at a whole bunch
and I'm just not feeling like anything I find is "it." Teal seems to be an option limiter, but it is what I'd really like. Any suggestions or thoughts for me?

Have you considered a ruggable for a dog/kid room? Our living room is the one place we DON'T have a ruggable, but I think when we replace the rug it will be. There are 10 pages of blue/green so hopefully you'll find something you like, but here's a few I thought were good if you think you're open to that:
So the issue with a Ruggable for the family room, for me, is that they generally fall short on the plushness or pile I’m looking for.
We have a 9x12 Ruggable in the dining room, and I like it for that purpose. I’m pretty sure 9x12 is only available with the thin pad, that's what we have.
(Don’t mind the toddler birthday party decorations, lol.)
I like it for the DR, where chairs are sliding back and forth, and a high pile would be a pain. But I wouldn’t call it cozy at all. I’m looking for a warmer, cozier, more substantial feel for the family room.
We also have a smaller Ruggable with the thicker pad in DD’s room. It’s better, but still not the feel I’m hoping for for the FR.
We have wool rugs in a few other rooms, and they are more along the lines of the feel I was going for. IDK if other materials would also give that feel.
Oh good! I’m glad you guys like that one. I think I’m going to just order it. It’s 3/4” pile and well reviewed, and I like how the colors look in the review photos. Hopefully it works out well. Thanks for weighing in.
Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said that first rug was pricy!
I really like it though - the colors and the shapes. For your space, I prefer it to the ‘wavy’ look of the second one you posted. A rug will really change the look of that room - can’t wait to see it!
