my go to first birthday gift is a name puzzle. I gifted one once and it was well received so it just became a thing. The Lovevery block set. We got it for DS2 for his first birthday. The box can get turned into a pully car, the lid can be a ramp, all sorts of cool stuff.

Both our boys play with it almost equally and DS1 is 7.
