DOJ investigating Trump’s actions in Jan 6 criminal probe

Prosecutors who are questioning witnesses before a grand jury — including two top aides to Vice President Mike Pence — have asked in recent days about conversations with Trump, his lawyers, and others in his inner circle who sought to substitute Trump allies for certified electors from some states Joe Biden won, according to two people familiar with the matter. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The prosecutors have asked hours of detailed questions about meetings Trump led in December 2020 and January 2021; his pressure campaign on Pence to overturn the election; and what instructions Trump gave his lawyers and advisers about fake electors and sending electors back to the states, the people said. Some of the questions focused directly on the extent of Trump’s involvement in the fake-elector effort led by his outside lawyers, including John Eastman and Rudy Giuliani, these people said.

This is what I fear. He is announcing his run so early to make any investigation a political opponent thing.

I don’t think they’ve been at it since they took office though it seems. Maybe they wanted to wait for the committee to get started so it didn’t look political.

I don’t think they’ve been at it since they took office though it seems. Maybe they wanted to wait for the committee to get started so it didn’t look political.

This has to be done right because it is a very huge deal and cannot look political.  Legal investigations can take a really long time.  Thinking the DOJ was going to arrest Trump 6 months after he left office was not realistic.  It also appears that there were not a lot of witnesses cooperating and/or being forthcoming and I think some of that has changed.  A proper investigation would be done quietly.   It is my understanding that Garland's prior investigations into the Oklahoma City bombing and the Unibomber had no leaks until they had the indictments, so this tracks.

I respect that. I do. But Jan 6 was EGREGIOUS and we all watched it go down in realtime so I think there is less room to call it politically motivated. At least for reasonable people, which does not include the people in DT’s comet dust of shit.

I believed what people were saying for a while about how these things take time, but it has been shared lately that the DOJ seems to be learning new things as we all are from the J6 committee. That, to me, was very unexpected.

Whenever I read this title, I just say "no" in my head because I'm too afraid to get my hopes up that there will be *actual* consequences for 45. I just want to be surprised one day by him being arrested.

Everything I've read said that the committee is jeopardizing the investigation. I posted articles on it and why the committee is bad, but yes let's keep on thinking the DOJ hasn't been building a careful case until it had to do damage control.

I remember this but since I had not yet listened to the hearings when you posted them, the article didn’t register.  I’m gonna go look those threads up.

I can’t exactly fault the committee because Congress had / has to act and probably wasn’t privvy to the investigation since they are an independent body from the DOJ. My opinion on that may change when I read the articles, though.

I’m skeptical the GOP is going to back Trump fully. I think they’re hoping he doesn’t announce before midterms so that after the election they can start trying to push someone else (like DeSantis) forward.

Laurence Tribe said tonight on Anderson that the only reason that DOJ didn’t get to Meadows with contemp of Congress was because they have bigger plans for him. He said it means if he doesn’t flip which they will want him too he could be charged with seditious conspiracy.

All of this sounds lovely but I also got excited for the Mueller Trial.

I feel like I'm naive and too optimistic, but I feel like at some point, the division in this country will hurt the GOP more than it will help.  And trump 100% fully sows the division.  

With SCOTUS and gerrymandering, maybe division will never hurt them.  But... I just feel like Trump at some point is NOT going to be the beacon of light that he once was.  

However, unfortunately, that then means DeSantis, who really is more frightening.

I'm on the other side of the world, 12-13 hrs from eastern time (depends on time of year). I even fucking watched most of it in real time.

I woke up at 3am, thought I'd check my phone to just confirm what we all knew would happen, back to sleep, no biggie. Yeah. It was definitely a biggie. I didn't go back to sleep. I was getting calls from friends in my time zone. The whole fucking world watched it!
