CDC says updated booster for younger kids will be available in a short time after. Like…how short, though? School starts next week. I’d like to know if we’re talking “short” like October or “short” like Jan/Feb. Argh.
Where are you seeing the short time after? This article says, "The new booster campaign could be broadened to younger children later," which feels far off.
Sorry, it wasn’t in this article, it was in a CDC release.
“• Additional details regarding the timing of pre-ordering for Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric bivalent vaccines will be updated based on available information. It is expected that at least one bivalent vaccine for children ages 11 years and younger may be authorized within a short time following the authorization(s) of bivalent vaccines for people ages 12 years and older. Sites should plan to manage necessary freezer and refrigerator space when developing their overall fall vaccine plans.”

How far apart did you space shots 1 and 2 for the under five crowd? It’s been 4 weeks now. I can find him a Friday after school spot so that would be not quite 5 weeks? But he’s getting over a cold and Shot 1 made him miserable sick
There are almost no kid appointments around here. Our pediatrician is too small of a clinic to stock it, only the big clinics get it.
The pediatricians at our office are recommending 8 weeks between the two Moderna shots, since it may offer greater overall protection. They will allow us to schedule any time after 4 weeks, but we have decided to follow their guidance for our 6 month old, who received his first shot right after he turned 6 months.

My pediatrician recommended the same for Pfizer shots 1 and 2 - 8 weeks - so we are spacing out all three shots by 8 weeks, not just the third.
It obviously means we have to wait longer until they are considered fully vaccinated, but I’m fine with it. Also, both of my DDs already had Covid.

I guess I’ll wait a bit then. We did Pfizer, there was no Moderna around here. I asked our pedi but she wasn’t super sure since they aren’t giving the shots. She thought the big clinic would tell us, but since we aren’t real patients at the big clinic they couldn’t care less

In my case, both my pedi and the large community vaccine clinic I took my DDs to recommended that unless we had anyone immunocompromised in the home and thus had a more pressing need to get immunity more quickly, they would recommend spacing out all three Pfizer shots by 8 weeks for hopefully better long term results.
Welp. We got home from vacation and both kids and H have now tested positive. As much as it sucks at least it's happening now when they can stay home and not during the first days of school. We only tested because they were going to spend the last week of summer with my in laws, my daughter has no symptoms at all and my son only has a stuffy nose. They just had their booster a few weeks ago, so I think that's why. They are triple vaxxed and this is their second infection, so please please please let this get them through the holiday season.
School starts Monday and we got all our beginning of the year reminders today including updated COVID protocols: "Just like prior to COVID, please do not send a sick child into school."
I noticed last night DS had a lot of sneezing, runny nose, congestion, etc going on. We were supposed to go to an extended family picnic with my dad's side of the family today so I decided to do a rapid test on him. Of course it's positive. He's so annoyed, "where would I have been exposed??" Um, kid, you went back to school this week with how many other kids? Then he tells me he had a sore throat Thursday but just thought it was allergies so he ignored it. 🙄 I suppose I need to cancel my hair appointment for tomorrow right? I read through the CDC site and it seems like we all need to stay home for the 5 days at least. Right? I should know this but it's our first positive test experience.

Are you fully vaxxed and boosted? I don’t think cdc guidelines say you have to stay home, but you should mask and if you develop symptoms, then you should stay home. I would probably call the salon and ask if they want you to reschedule out of courtesy.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

No, the cdc changed quarantine guidelines, so you don’t need to quarantine. However, if it were me personally I wouldn’t do non essential things like a hair appointment where you’ll be close to a person for an hour plus if I was living with someone who was positive, but that’s just my personal opinion and not what the cdc says. Yes I’d still go to work since that’s necessary though.

Thanks. I did find the updated guidance. It doesn't seem worth it keep the hair appointment this weekend.
New Pfizer booster will be available for 12+ and Moderna for 18+ but I still haven’t seen any clues as to when it will be available for under 12, has anyone else?

Pfizer announced I think today that they plan to submit for EUA on the 6-11 booster in October. Moderna is expected to follow soon after, but no specifics on timing yet. Their application will be for 7-18.
Under 5 will likely lag a bit behind that as their booster trials for both Pfizer and Moderna are pretty early. Best guess timing for this age group is November, but depending on what data the FDA and CDC indicate they need for this approval it could possibly move more quickly or much more slowly. A lot of folks are hoping that ACIP will discuss this on Friday.

Will the kids boosters be the updated BA5 version as well?

Unclear right now, but we have every reason to believe yes, especially for the 5/6-11 cohort. The Pfizer application expected in October that I mentioned above will be for BA5 based on OG booster data like the adult cohorts. The only complicating factor would be if FDA or CDC insisted on a different evidence base for the approval of <12 than for other age groups.
BA5 hasn’t been directly tested in any of the age cohorts, they’re relying on inferences from mice data about efficacy. This is the right choice in my opinion and will likely set the stage for approval of more frequent updated boosters in the longer term which is good. But because they’ve consistently been more conservative about approvals for the pediatric group, and especially <5 it could play out differently. The <5 trials right now are mostly planning to test BA1 bivalent boosters, with a much smaller cohort of Moderna kids getting BA5 bivalent. So there won’t be enough data for an approval of BA5 based on the trial data alone. Hopefully this doesn’t create a massive slowdown and kids can get the most up to date boosters.
All that said, there’s a lot of controversy about whether it was the right decision for the US to insist on BA5 boosters rather than BA1 which is what the rest of the world is doing. A lot of experts don’t expect it to be all that much more effective than BA1 and kids that will need boosting this fall would almost certainly be better served getting any booster (even OG version) rather than waiting months and months for trials to conclude if regulators aren’t willing to act on nice data. My own kid will likely be eligible for a the ROVER booster trial (BA1 bivalent) as an original Moderna placebo group kid before a broader approval for <5 boosters and if so we will take it as soon as it is available to us rather than waiting for a BA5 approval.

We had our annual well visit for my kids yesterday. Our doctor said not to wait for the new booster, and what I am reading here confirms it will be a while. (They are 10) Annoyingly, the location we go doesn't have Covid vaccines or boosters, so I still have to make another appointment for those. They got their flu shots though, so that was nice.

Thanks! October is reasonable. I know it’s still a roll of the dice but at least it doesn’t sound like we’ll have to wait 6 months and 2 more variants for updated kids boosters.

At least not for the 5-11 group! I’m admittedly less optimistic about the <5 group but we’ll see how it plays out. Right now 5+ is objectively more urgent bc with the exception of the <5 trial kids, that group is coming up on needing additional boosters that are better suited to the current variant.
I do admit the current projected early Dec peak of the next wave makes me nervous for the <5 booster approval timeline. Even through the trial we are looking at a late Nov booster timeline and that puts us solidly into case escalation with possibly waning protection. It could be another long fucking winter. Maybe I’ll feel better after hearing the ACIP discussion Friday.

We had ours this week, too. Our doctor recommended that we wait for the updated version. I’m not sure if all of us having Covid in June played into that or if that’s her blanket advice for everyone. I do know that she’s waiting for her kids.

I'm wondering what to do about DD and DS1 who turned 12 earlier this week. They got their <12 booster a few months ago when they became available. Should we get them the new booster since it covers new variants since they are over 12? (And, I'll also talk to their dr. at their well-visit next week.) I'm not sure what to do.

How long ago is a few months? If less than 4-5 months I might wait until October to get the new booster depending on your risk tolerance (if low risk tolerance and especially if school is starting now, get it sooner) but looking at the projections for the timing of the next wave I wouldn’t hold off longer than mid or maaaaaybe late October. The new booster is much more effective than the prior one against the variants currently circulating (and likely against the variant that will drive the fall wave too) plus their prior boosters were at the lower dose for their prior age bracket.
