Insider reports New Jersey state tax code states any land that is dedicated to cemetery purposes is exempt from all taxes, rates, and assessments. Cemetery companies are also specifically exempt from paying any real estate taxes, rates, and assessments or personal property taxes on their lands, as well as business taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, and inheritance taxes.
Leave it to Trump to find a loophole. So In all seriousness what’s to stop people from burying grandma in the backyard and calling it a cemetery?
Many states allow it as long as you follow local zoning laws and some require you have a funeral director carry out certain post death duties. I don't expect an uptick though because resell and all. A beautiful 4bd, 5ba and oh yeah, don't mind grandma out by the shed.

I laughed too hard and hurt myself.
Me too!!
Now I’m wondering if the house across from me that finally sold after nearly a year (way overpriced gut job) didn’t sell because the woman who died a few years back is still there in the yard…

Maybe I’m weird, but this wouldn’t bother me at all….

You’re not alone. My brain immediately went to “well if they’re not required to disclose it in a real estate transaction then they’ll never know!” *shrug*

Nope. I'll tend the flower bed over the gravesite if the house is priced right.
I don't have a lot of preferences about what happens to my body after death (I won't need it or know anyway) but I think I would come back and haunt someone who chose to bury me on my XH's property. I can think of few worse scenarios. This is just so weird to me.
I have a (much older) friend who buried a family member who died tragically on her property. I know it brings her a lot of comfort to have him nearby, but I also have wondered about the long term implications. Unless that property stays in the family forever, I think a home is such a complicated place to bury a person. A golf course is a bit different of course but seems more inappropriate too. Though given this family, perhaps it is fitting.

Burial at home wasn't uncommon back in the day, especially in rural places - the people who bought my great grandparents' farm built their house like 20 yards from the family cemetery. But I'd feel weird about a new-ish grave.
I know this is all speculation right now, but ugh, these people have no shame.

I feel like cremation gives you the same comfort but with fewer complications.
What is even weirder about this story is that it says in the press that she was cremated. So why is there a burial plot except for tax purposes?
A lot of people bury cremains with a headstone.
My grandparents cremains were interred with a (flat) headstone. They're sorta cuddled into the family plot. It's getting cozy in there but since nobody in the most recent generation went with coffins so far they all still fit. My grandfather told me once he thought cemeteries were stupid because they were inefficient and people should be buried standing up. Like use a posthole digger and a cardboard tube. Done! We...didn't do that.

Yes, but typically in a cemetery. Usually, one would spread ashes in a place that a loved one held dear, if it was out in nature. Or plant a tree on the property. Or, you could also do this on your property without anyone knowing as it’s not hard to dig a hole for ashes.
But really, it’d be nefarious no matter what he did as he’s in BEC for us all.
